Materials
1 full skein of Caron’s Simply Soft (7oz/366 yards) in main color
Bernat Softee Baby will also work- other worsted weight yarns will produce larger results
small amount of Caron’s Simply Soft in contrasting color (optional)
5.5mm (I) hook (or hook needed to obtain gauge)
Flower embellishment (optional)

Hdc- 12sts and 10 rows = 4”

Chest 20”
Length (shoulder to hem) 14 ½”
Special Stitches
FHDC– foundation half double crochet
Ch 3 and yarn over (YO). Insert hook in 3rd chain from hook. YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook). YO and draw through 1 loop (1 chain made). YO and draw through all loops on hook—1 foundation half double crochet. This is your first fhdc. For each additional fhdc needed; YO and insert hook under the 2 loops of the “chain” of last stitch and pull up loop. YO and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
Notes (unless otherwise noted)
• Ch2 at the beginning of each row does not count as first hdc or in stitch count
• Sl st into the top of the ch to join rounds in body portion
• Once the bodice is complete be sure to use minimal tension during the rest of the pattern, particularly the hdc edging at top and bottom of bodice.
• To join each shell round: Sl st into the top of the ch3.
• To begin the next shell round: Sl st into the next st then sl st into the ch 1 space OR next (middle) st.
BODICE- Notice- change made to bodice on 02/26/14- to close small gap left in first shell row- chart below- picture to illustrate further will be coming shortly.
Row 1: Fhdc 8. Ch2 and turn
Rows 2-50: 1hdc in every st around. Ch2 and turn. <8>
Row 51: Fold piece in half so that the bottom/first row is behind the row you are currently working on and line up the stitches. *YO, insert hook in the first front stitch (on half closest to you), YO and draw loop through the stitch (three loops on hook). Insert hook into the corresponding st in the back half of piece (half furthest from you). YO and draw loop through stitch, and all three loops on hook. Repeat from *to end.
BODY (From here on first hdc of every row is a Ch2. Sl st into the top of the Ch2 to join rounds)
Round 1: Without removing hook, turn the entire piece inside out, so that you can stitch across the top of finished loop. Loosely st across top, 1hdc in the end of every hdc row of bodice. <51>
Round 2: 1hdc in every st around. <51>
Round 3: [Ch3. 1dc. Ch1. 2dc] in first st. 1fpdc in the next post. Skip one st. *[2dc. Ch1. 2dc] in next st. 1fpdc in the next post. Skip one st. Repeat from * around. <17 shells and 17 fpdc>. Each shell has two stitches between- there will be one fpdc in the center.
Round 4: Ch3 and 4dc in first Ch1 space. 1fpdc in next fpdc. *5dc in the next Ch1 sp. 1fpdc in next fpdc. Repeat from * around. <17 shells and 17 fpdc>
Round 5: [Ch3. 1dc. Ch1. 2dc] in the middle st of shell. 1fpdc in next fpdc. *[2dc. Ch1. 2dc] in the middle of next shell. 1fpdc in next fpdc. Repeat from * around. <17 shells and 17fpdc>
Round 6: Ch3 and 4dc in first Ch1 space. 1fpdc in the next fpdc. *5dc in the next Ch1 sp. 1fpdc in the next fpdc. Repeat from * around. <17 shells and 17fpdc>
Rounds 7-14: Repeat rows 5 & 6 respectfully. Fasten off and weave in ends.
ARMS
Arms Round 1: Turn so piece so that you are working in the back. Insert hook and attach yarn to the left of the back seam. 1hdc in the top of every hdc row of bodice. <51>
Arms Round 2: 2hdc in next st. 1hdc in each of the next 5sts. In next st; YO and insert hook. YO and draw through 1 loop. YO and draw through all loops on hook, this is 1fhdc. Fhdc 20 more <21>. Count 11sts to the left of this row on bodice, and attach fhdc row in the 12th st. Leaving those 11 sts empty, continue to work across the front of the bodice. 1hdc in each of the next 13sts. Working off of this st, fhdc 21 in the same manner as before. Count 11sts to the left, and attach fhdc row in the 12th st. Leaving those 11 sts empty. Continue to work across the back of the bodice, 1hdc in each of the remaining 6sts. Fasten off (you can weave in tail or leave long to work over in a later step)
Arms Round 3: Turn piece over so that you are working on the front. Insert hook in the stitch where the arm strap meets the bodice, to the right of the arms strap (so that you are working on the outside of the strap). Working up the arm strap towards the back, 1hdc in each of the next 3sts. [Skip 2sts. {2dc. Ch1. 2dc} in the same st] 3x. Skip 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 6sts. 1sc in each of the 12sts of the underarm. Sl st into base of arm strap.
Arms Round 4: Working back up the arm strap 1hdc in each of the next 3sts. Skip 2sts. 5dc in each of the next three Ch1 spaces. Skip 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 6sts. Sl st in to base of underarm strap. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Arms Round 5: Turn piece over so that you are working on the back. Insert hook in the stitch where the arm strap meets the bodice, to the right of the arms strap (so that you are working on the outside of the strap). Working up the arm strap towards the front, 1hdc in each of the next 6sts. [Skip 2sts. {2dc. Ch1. 2dc} in the same st] 3x. Skip 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 3sts. 1sc in each of the 12sts of the underarm. Sl st into base of arm strap.
Arms Round 6: Working back up the arm strap 1hdc in each of the next 6sts. 5dc in each of the next 3 Ch1 spaces. Skip 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 3sts. Sl st in to base of underarm strap. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Arms Round 7: Turn piece so that you are working on the back. Insert hook where the arm strap meets the bodice on the right hand side (so that you are working on the inside of the straps). Attach yarn and sc in each of the next 20sts of the arm strap. Hdc2tog in the last st of the arm strap and the first st of the bodice. 1hdc in each of the next 11sts across the front of bodice. Hdc2tog in the last st of bodice and the first st of the arm strap. 1sc in each of the remaining 20sts of the next arm strap and in each of the stitches across the back of the bodice. Sl st into the first sc to join.
Arms Round 8: 1sc in the next 15sts. Skip 3sts. [5dc in the next st. Skip 3sts] 5x. 1sc in each of the next 15sts. Sl st into the next st. Fasten off and weave in ends. Use my invisible finish to end HERE
You can leave tank top as is for a simple clean look OR use the optional finish below, flower pattern and leave pattern
OPTIONAL FINISH
1. Using coordinating color. Starting in the back, insert hook and attach yarn in the center of a 5dc shell. Ch1 and 4sc in same st. 1fpdc in the next fpdc. *5sc in the center (3rd) st of the next shell. 1fpsc in the next fpdc. Repeat from * around. Sl st into the first sc to join round. Fasten off and weave in ends.
2. Both arms- for left arm start in the back, for right arm start in the front. Insert hook and attach yarn in space before the first shell of the arm strap. Ch1. [5sc in the middle (3rd) st of of the next shell. 1sc in the space after shell] 3x. Fasten off and weave in ends.
