This newborn hat is simple and easy to make this delicious treat for newborn photo shoots. Its aptly named “The Apple of my Eye”.

Please note, this is one of the first patterns I ever wrote. It does not have gauge, however you can make this hat to fit any size using my How to Design Your Own Custom Crochet Hat post HERE. I also wish I had better images, though I may remake this hat someday and get some new photos.
YARN
Caron’s Simply Soft in
Chocolate (or any brown, for stem)
Garnet (or any red, for apple)
Pistachio (or any green for leaves)
MATERIALS
4.0 mm crochet hook
5.0 mm crochet hook
yarn needle
STITCH GUIDE
sc- single crochet, hdc- half double crochet, dc- double crochet, sl st- slip stitch, st- stitch, sp- space, yo- yarn over
NOTES
- The first hdc of each round is a Ch2
- The stem is made in continuous rounds with no sl st. To join the rounds of the apple section, sl st into the top of the Ch2
- To change color, begin last st of round before color change, when there are the last two loops remaining on the hook, YO with the new color and compete st
PATTERN
Stem
Using 4.0mm hook, starting with brown for stem
Round 1: magic circle– crochet 5 sc inside circle, join with sl st
Rounds 2-10: Working in a spiral sc in each sp until 10 rows (or desired stem length is achieved), do not sl st to join. Weave in beginning tail after completing 2-3 rows or you will never be able to sew it in and it will not stay closed tight.
Body of apple
Change to Red (or green) for apple and change to 5.0mm hook
Round 1: 3hdc into every st around (15)
Round 2: 2hdc in every st around (30)
Round 3: *1hdc in each of the next 4sts. 2hdc in the next st. Repeat from * around (35)
Round 4: *1hdc in each of the next 5sts. 2hdc in the next st. Repeat from * around (40)
Rounds 5-12: 1hdc in every st around (40)
Rounds 13-14: 1sc in every st around (40). Fasten off and weave in ends.
Large Leaf
Row 1: leaving a long tail, Ch10
Row 2: turn, 1sc in every st (9)
Row 3: turn, 1sc in each of the next 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 2sts. 1dc in the next st, 1hdc in each of the next 2sts. 1sc in each of the next 2sts. Ch1 at the top of the leaf (9)
Row 4: Stitching back down the other side. 1sc in each of the next 2sts. 1hdc in each of the next 2sts. 1dc in the next st. 1hdc in each of the next 2sts. 1sc in each of the next 2sts (9). Fasten off. Leave long tail to stitch to hat.
Small Leaf
Row 1: Leaving a long tail, Ch 7
Row 2: turn, 1sc in every st (6)
Row 3: turn, 1sc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st. 1dc in the next st, 1dc in the next st, 1hdc in the next st, 1sc in the next st. Ch1 at the top of the leaf (6)
Row 4: Stitching back down the other side. 1sc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st. 1dc in the next st, 1dc in the next st, 1hdc in the next st, 1sc in the next st (6). Fasten off. Leave long tail to stitch to hat.
FINISHING
Using needle weave in all loose ends on hat and sew leaves (small leaf first, large leaf slightly overlapping top of small leaf) at base of stem.
