Foundation Double Crochet

June 27, 2013 By: Lorene

Free Crochet Tutorial
Foundation Double Crochet

This method is used to replace the beginning chain and the second row in any dc pattern. It combines both to not only save the step but also to provide a more professional look. Below is my picture tutorial on this method. If you have any questions please feel free to comment below. I hope to make a video tutorial soon as well.

This method seems complicated at first, but once you learn it, it is really quite easy.   You will find this stitch abbreviated as fcdc in patterns or even dcfc (double crochet foundation chain).

1) Ch 3

2) You will be stitching into the 1st ch (3rd ch from hook).  1st two chains will count as your first fcdc

1

3) Yarn over and insert hook into 1st ch, yarn over and pull through ch (3 loops on hook)

2

4) Yarn over and pull through the 1st loop on hook, leaving 3 loops on hook (this will be referred to as the sl st of previous st in subsequent steps)

3

5) Yarn over again and pull through the 1st two loops on the hook, leaving two loops on the hook

4

6) Yarn over again and pull through two remaining loops on the hook,  this has completed your 1st and 2nd fcdc

5

7) To make your 3rd, and every subsequent fcdc you will, yarn over and insert hook into the space created when you made the sl st of the previous st

6

You will repeat steps 3-6 for each stitch required in pattern (Yarn over, insert hook into sl st of previous st, yarn over and pull through st (three loops on hook).  Yarn over and pull through 1st loop on hook (three loops remaining on hook).  Yarn over and pull through 1st two loops on hook (two loops remaining on hook).  Yarn over again and pull through last two remaining loops)

Here is a completed row of 10 fcdc
