This free afghan crochet square, The Windmill Square, is designed using front post stitches, increased in a windmill shape.  This 12″ square is great for an afghan or a crochet pillow.

YARN
Worsted weight yarn in four colors- I used Red Heart With Love
Approx. 15 yards for color A (CA), 25 yards for color B (CB), 35 yards for color C (CC), and 45 yards for color D (CD)

MATERIALS
5.5 mm (I) Hook
yarn needle

NOTES

• All FP (front post) stitches in the pattern are completed the same as a regular stitch, except that instead of inserting the hook in the two top loops, you will insert the hook around the post (from previous round) from front to back
• Be mindful of the stitches called for in pattern, as they change within each round. Stitches used for “X” stitches are longer than the stitches used for the rest of the round.
• Be mindful of when color changes are made, please make sure you make the changes where specified in pattern, they are not made when you join round.
• Ch3 counts as first dc
• Color changes are notated for the pink/purple sample. The black/white sample is done with 3 rounds black, 4 rounds each of grey and white.

INSTRUCTIONS

Round 1: Beginning with CA. Ch6. Join with sl st. Ch3. [V stitch. 2dc] 3x. Vst. 1dc. Sl st into top of ch3 to join.

Round 2: Sl st into the next dc. Ch3. [*Vst in next ch3. 1dc in the next dc. 1fpdc in each of the next 2 dc**. 1 dc in the next dc] 3x. Repeat from * to **. Sl st into the top of the ch3 to join.

Round 3: Sl st into next dc, changing to CB on sl st. Ch3. [*SH in next ch3. 1dc in the next dc. Skip the next dc. 1fptr in the next fpdc. 1fptr in the skipped dc. Skip the next fpdc. 1fptr in the next dc. 1frtr in the skipped fpdc**. 1dc in the next dc] 3x. Repeat from * to **. Sl st into the top of the ch3 to join.

Round 4: Ch3. 1dc in each of the next 2dcs. [*Vst in the next ch3. 1dc in each of the next 3dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next 4 fp sts **. 1dc in each of the next 3dcs] 3x. Repeat from * to **. Sl st into the top of the ch3 to join.

Round 5: Sl st into next dc, changing to CC on sl st. Ch3. 1dc in each of the next 2dcs. [*SH in next ch3. 1dc in each of the next 3dcs.
