Cordial Cadet Cap w/Ponytail Opening
A fun breathable cadet cap for summer, using the new Red Heart Cordial Yarn.

Size H/5.0mm hook – for back ridge rounds
Size J/6.0mm hook – for most of the pattern

Doll – 11″, toddler – 19″, child, teen/small adult – 21″, and large adult – 23″. This item is not recommended for a small baby. If you do make this item for a small baby please line the inside to protect the head, as this
is a stiff yarn. This is not designed to be a deep Hat. Pill box style hats, and cadet hats are more shallow than average hats, reference the cover photos if necessary PLEASE CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

CH(s) – chain(s), SC – single crochet, HDC – half double crochet, ST(s) – stitch(es), BLO – back loop only, RS -right side
- Hat is worked in the round; Use a Stitch marker or piece of yarn to mark rounds
- This yarn may fatigue your hands as you go, causing you to loosen gauge; Stop to measure gauge often
- Beginning CH1, never counts as a ST
R1: In Magic Circle, CH 1, 6 SC, close circle TIGHTLY, join to 1st SC with the first stitch of R2 (6 ST)
R2: 6 SC INC (12 ST)
R3: *(SC INC, SC) repeat from * around (18 ST)
R4: *(SC, SC INC, SC) repeat from * around (24 ST)
R5: *(SC INC, 3 SC) repeat from * around (30 ST)
R6: *(2 SC, SC INC, 2 SC) repeat from * around (36 ST) Hat should measure 3.5″ across at this point
R7: *(SC INC, 5 SC) repeat from * around (42 ST) Hat should measure 4″ across at this point
R8: *(3 SC, SC INC, 3 SC) repeat from * around (48 ST) Hat should measure 4.5″ across at this point
R9: *(SC INC, 7 SC) repeat from * around (54 ST) Hat should measure 5.25″ across at this point
R10: *(4 SC, SC INC, 4 SC) repeat from * around (60 ST) Hat should measure 6″ across at this point
R11: *(SC INC, 9 SC) repeat from * around (66 ST) Hat should measure 6.5″ across at this point
R12: *(5 SC, SC INC, 5 SC) repeat from * around (72 ST) Finish off. Hat should measure 7″ across at this point
R1: Using H hook, join yarn to the back ridge of the 1st ST of your last “Hat Top Round”. SC in the back ridge of
each stitch around, join to 1st ST with a SL ST (72 ST)
R2: Switching back to J hook now, CH1, turn, SC INC in each ST around, join to 1st SC with SL ST (144 ST)
R3: CH1, turn, SC DEC in each ST around, join to 1st ST with a SL ST (72 ST)
R4: CH1, turn, SC around, join to 1st ST with a SL ST (72 ST)
R5: CH 1, turn, SL ST LOOSELY around in FLO, join to 1st ST with a SL ST (72 ST)
R6: CH1, turn, SC 64 around in BLO from R4, stop and leave the last few stitches unworked (64 ST)
R7: CH1, turn SC INC in each ST across (128 ST)
R8: CH1, turn, SC DEC across (64 ST)
R9: CH1, turn, SC across (64 ST)
R10: CH 1, turn, SL ST LOOSELY around in BLO, when you get to the end, CH 13, turn
R11: In 2nd CH from hook, work SC in back ridge of each CH and in FLO from R9 (76 ST)
R12 : CH1, turn, SC 67, then *(CH2, skip 2 ST, SC 1), repeat from * to end of row. This will make 3 button holes (76 ST)
R13 : CH1, turn, SC in each SC and 2 times in each CH 2 space. (76 ST) Finish off.
R1: Using H hook, join yarn to R13 in the BLO of the 28th ST. SC in the BLO of the same ST you joined, working
only in BLO now, HDC 22, SC 1 (24 ST)
R2: Switching back to J hook now, DO NOT CH1, turn, skip 1stST, SC in next ST, HDC 21, SC 1 (23 ST)
R3: DO NOT CH1, turn, skip 1stST, SC in next ST, HDC (20), SC 1 (22 ST)
FINISHING Add button to corner across from button strap. Wear and enjoy!
