The title Hooked! 40 Whimsical Crochet Motifs from Weird to Wonderful is definitive of what the eclectic set of patterns found inside this book. This book is written by a mother and her two daughters who are crafty to no end. They have gotten together to provide us with their take on crochet motifs. The crochet motifs found inside are cute, adorable, and slightly weird – though weird is a relative thing. What’s weird to me may not be weird to you.

As I set out to browse through the book and look at the different patterns, I realized that the format, or layout if you will, of every pattern is consistent through out the book. This is good because you know exactly what to expect from pattern to pattern.

You are given the items you will need, including yardage required. The only thing you are not given is the yarn/fiber weight. Which is not a problem because as far as motifs go, you can make them with whatever yarn/fiber weight you desire to make it yours.

How cute are these little birds?

You are given the instructions, or notes, then the pattern. At the end of most patterns you are given wonderful tips on how to use the motif. I love that. It helps to paint a picture in your mind on how to use that particular motif.

The wonderful thing about this book is that you are not just given the patterns and nothing else. There is a gallery that shows you how each motif was used. Which you won’t be able to look away without saying “how cute”. There is a also a stitch guide, with visuals on how to create the stitches, and a tips section. Both of these are great for beginners or those wanting to venture into something different. There’s no excuse for not being able to make these motifs.

While this book is written using UK crochet terms, there is a conversion chart into US terms to help you in using the correct stitch required for each pattern. There is also a conversion chart for hooks that help you to chose the correct hook, as stated in the pattern.

This a great book to use if you want to embellish an existing crochet project, or non-crochet project to jazz it up a bit. Your imagination on how to use these motifs is your only limitation. I’d definitely say the possibilities are endless when using these motifs.
