The Latent Heart Square is a 12 inch crochet square, perfect for an afghan. Crochet yours in as many colors as you like, or in a single color if you wish, it’s completely up to you.

Worsted Weight yarn approx. 90 yards total in your choice of colors.  I used Red Heart With Love.

MATERIALS
6.0 mm (J) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge – I used my Green Apple Candy Shop Furls Crochet to make the Latent 12″ Crochet Square

STITCH GUIDE
ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), BLO – back loop only, RS – right side,

SPECIAL STITCHES

CA – Color A, CB – Color B, CC – Color C, CD – Color D

3dc cluster– yarn over (yo) insert hook in st, yo and pull through loop, [yo and pull through two loops] 3x, leaving 4 loops remaining on hook, yo and pull through all four loops.

NOTES

  • Ch 3 counts as first dc.
  • Color changes are notated in pattern but you can use whatever color combinations/changes you want. No matter what color selections you make, you will need to fasten off the yarn on rows 4, 5 & 6, in order for the next row to be set up right, all other rows you can sl st over to the first st of next round before changing color.
  • Rows 4 & 5 are the hearts, you may want to make these a specific color.
  • Each round will end with sl st into the top of the beginning ch-3 unless otherwise noted.


PATTERN

Round 1: Beginning with CA; Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 6, [dc, ch 3] 7x, sl st into the 3rd ch of the beginning ch-5 to join round.

Round 2: Sl st into the first ch-3 sp, [ch 2, 2 dc] in same sp, ch 4, [3dc cluster, ch 4] 7x, sl st into the first dc (skipping over beginning ch-2) to join. Fasten off

Round 3: Change to CB; Join yarn in any ch-3 sp, [ch 3, dc, ch2, 2 dc] in same sp, ch 2, *[2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the next ch-3 sp, ch 2, repeat from * around. Mark the last ch 2. Fasten off.

Round 4: Change to CC; Join yarn in the marked sp, [ch 3, 2 dc] in same sp, ch 2, sc in ch-2 of next shell, ch 2, *3 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sc in ch-2 of next shell, ch 2, repeat from * around.

Round 5: [Ch 2, dc, hdc] in same st, sl st in next dc, [hdc, dc, hdc] in next dc, ch 4, skip next sc, *[hdc, dc, hdc] in next dc, sl st in next dc, [hdc, dc, hdc] in next dc, ch 4, skip next sc, repeat from * around, sl st into top of beginning ch-2 to join. Fasten off

Round 6: Change to CD; Join yarn in any ch-4 sp, [ch 3, 2dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in same sp, ch 5, *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in next ch-4 sp, ch 5, repeat from * around. Fasten off

Round 7: Change to CA; Join yarn in any ch-5 sp, [ch 3, 3dc, ch 3, 4dc] in same sp, ch 3, sc in ch-2 of next shell, ch 3, 5 sc in next ch-5, ch 3, sc in ch-2 of next shell, ch 3, * [4dc, ch 3, 4dc] in next ch-5, ch 3, sc in ch 2 of next shell, ch 3, 5 sc in next ch-5, ch 3, sc in ch-2 of next sh, ch 3, repeat from * around, change to CB on sl st. Fasten off CA.

Round 8: With CB; Ch 3, dc in each of the next 3-dc, [dc, ch 3, dc] in next ch-3 sp, dc in each of the next 4-dc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, ch 3, skip 2 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, *dc in each of the next 4-dc, [dc, ch 3, dc] in next ch-3 sp, dc in each of the next 4-dc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, ch 3, skip 2 sc, hdc in next sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, hdc in next sc, 2 hdc in next ch-3, repeat from * around.

Round 9: Ch 3, dc in each of the next 4-dc, *[2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next ch-3 sp, dc in each of the next 10 sts, 2dc in next ch-3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next ch-3, dc in each of the next 10 sts **, repeat from * to ** 2x, [2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc] in next ch-3 sp dc in each of the next 10 sts, 2 dc in next ch-3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next ch-3, dc in each of the next 5 sts, change to CC OR border color of choice on sl st.

Round 10: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in each st until you reach next ch-1 sp, 3 sc in ch-1, repeat from * around, sl st in top of first sc to join.

FINISHING

Fasten off and weave in all ends
