Swirling Leaves Wine Cozy/Gift Bag Free Crochet Pattern

November 5, 2015 By: Lorene

Swirling Leaves Wine Cozy/Gift Bag

If you are new to my patterns, you may not know that one of my favorite stitches is the Swirling Leaves stitch. I have several items in this stitch and decided that a wine cozy/gift bag free crochet pattern would be perfect with the holiday season fast approaching. This looks very elegant in Vanna’s Glamour but can be fun and funky too depending on what yarn choice you decide best fits the recipient.

DIFFICULTY
Intermediate

SIZE(S)
750 mL
1.5 L

GAUGE
Round 4 approximately 1.5 inches; Round 8 approximately 3; Round 10 approximately 3.75

STITCH GUIDE
ch(s) – chain(s), mc – magic circle, sc – single crochet, sc inc – single crochet increase, sp cl – split cluster, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es),  RS – right side, WS – wrong side, sk – skip

SPECIAL STITCHES
Foundation split cluster: work 3dc over stem of dc (beg ch 3 counts as dc) just worked but leaving last loop of each dc on hook, sk two sts, then work 4th dc into next st leaving last loop as before (5 loops on hook), yo and through all 5 loops.

Split cluster: work 3dc over stem of dc just worked but leaving last loop of each dc on hook, then work 4th dc into next ch sp leaving last loop as before (5 loops on hook), yo and through all 5 loops

Last cluster: work 3 dc over stem of dc just worked leaving last loop of each dc on hook, then sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch of round.

NOTES

  • You could use a heavier yarn and appropriate hook which would result in a larger gift bag rather than a wine cozy.
  • The beginning chs count as the first dc and ch sp. So a ch 5 is a dc and ch 2.
  • Make sure you are turning each round in the cluster rounds. Occasionally count your clusters to make sure you aren’t dropping a cluster.
  • A photo tutorial of the split cluster worked in the round can be found HERE
