Metamorphosis Square
This fun free 12″ afghan square pattern can be worked in so many different color combinations for a completely different look. The Metamorphosis Square would work awesome in an afghan, as a pillow or even stitched together to make a stylish poncho.

- Ch 3 is considered the first dc
- Ch 1 is not considered the first sc
- Optional color changes take place on the last yarn over of last st in round
PATTERN
The following four rows can be completed in one color or two
Ch 5, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 11dc in center opening of ring, sl st in beg ch-3 to join<12>
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in first st, 2dc in each st around, sl st in beg ch-3 to join <24>
Round 3: (optional color change) Ch 1, [sc, ch 5, sc] in first st (one corner made), sc in blo next 5 sts, *[sc, ch 5, sc] in the next st (one corner made), sc in blo next 5 sts, repeat from * twice more, sl st in first sc to join (skipping over beg ch-1)
Round 4: Sl st into first ch-5 corner, [ch 3, 5dc, ch 2, 6dc], skip next 3 sts, sc in next st, skip next 3 sts, *[6dc, ch 2, 6dc] in the next ch-5 corner, skip next 3 sts, sc in next st, skip next 3 sts repeat from * twice more, sl st in top of beg ch-3 to join, fasten off
Change color on every round for remainder of pattern
Round 5: Attach yarn by sl st in any corner; [ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc], sc in blo next 6 sts, working over next sc; 3 dc in the sc one row below, sc in blo next 6 sts, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in next corner, sc in blo next 6 sts, working over next sc; 3 dc in the sc one row below, sc in blo next 6 sts, repeat from * twice more, sl st in first sc to join (skipping over beg ch-1), fasten off
Round 6: Attach yarn by sl st in any corner; [ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2dc], sc in blo next 17sts, *[2dc, ch 2, 2dc] in next corner, sc in blo next 17sts, repeat from * twice more, sl st in top of beg ch-3 to join, fasten off
Round 7: Attach yarn by sl st in any corner, sl st in blo of next st, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, [2dc, ch 1, 2dc] in next st, [skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, [2dc, ch 1, 2dc] in next st] 2x, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, *[sl st in blo of next st, the next ch-2 corner and the next st], sc in next st, skip 2 sts, [2dc, ch 1, 2dc] in next st, [skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, [2dc, ch 1, 2dc] in next st] 2x, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip one st, repeat from * twice more, sl st in blo of next st and sl st in first sl st to join, fasten off

Round 12: Attach yarn by sl st in any corner, [ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc], dc in each of next 33 sts, *[sc, ch 2, sc] in next corner, sc in each of next 33 sts, repeat from * twice more, sl st in top of first sc (skipping over beg ch-1) to join, fasten off. Weave in all ends.
