The Persephone Square is a free 12″ afghan square that I designed specifically for the 2019 Moogly CAL. This square uses fun twists with stitches placed in different positions than where you would normally crochet.

ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), RS – right side,

If working in rows, turn work. If working in rounds spin hook completely around, making a twist in the loop. Pull up a loop to the height of a normal dc. YO with the loop so that the hook is behind the loop. Insert the hook into the first st of row. Complete a normal dc (YO and draw through st (3 loops on hook). YO and draw through first two loops on hook. YO and draw through last two loops on hook).
3 Double Crochet Cluster
Yarn over (YO), insert hook in stitch or space, YO, pull through, YO and pull through first two loops on hook, YO, insert hook back into same stitch or space, YO, pull through, YO and pull through all four loops on hook, ch 1, repeat from * two times more
NOTES
- Ch 1 is not considered the first st
- All chains are not counted in stitch counts
PATTERN
Rnd 1: Beginning with color A; make a magic circle, ch 3, 11dc, sl st into top of the ch-3 to join (change to color B). <12> (Video tutorial for magic circle here)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 or CSDC, dc in the same st, 2 dc in the next st, [ex fpdc, ch 3, ex fpdc] in the next POST, *2 dc in the next 2 sts, [ex fpdc, ch 3, ex fpdc] in the next POST, repeat from * two times more, sl st into top of ch-3 or CSDC to join (change to color A). <24>
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 4 sts, [sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-3, *sc in next 6 sts, [sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-3, repeat from *two times more, sc in the last st, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (do not change color). <32>
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 5 sts, ch 4 (skip the corner/ch-3), *sc in next 8 sts, ch 4 (skip the corner/ch-3), repeat from *two times more, sc in the last 2 sts, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (change to color C). <32>
Rnd 5: Ch 3 or CSDC, dc in next 5 sts, push the ch-4 forward and work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] into the ch-3 of the previous row, *dc in the next 8 sts, push the ch-4 forward and work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] into the ch-3 of the previous row, repeat from *two times more, dc in the last 2 sts, sl st in top of ch-3 or CSDC to join (fasten off). <48>
Rnd 6: Beginning with color A; join yarn in any corner/ch-2 and [ch 1, sc, ch 3, sc], ch 4, skip 3 sts, sc in the next st, ch 5, skip 4 sts, sc in the next, ch 4, skip 3 sts, *[sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-2, ch 4, skip 3 sts, sc in the next st, ch 5, skip 4 sts, sc in the next, ch 4, skip 3 sts, repeat from * two times more, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (change to color B).
Rnd 7: [Ch 3 or CSDC, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the ch-3, skip the next st, push the ch-4 forward and dc in the 3 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st, push the ch-5 forward and dc in the 4 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st, push the ch-4 forward and dc in the 3 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the ch-3, push the ch-4 forward and dc in the 3 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st, push the ch-5 forward and dc in the 4 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st, push the ch-4 forward and dc in the 3 unworked sts from the previous row, skip the next st, repeat from * two times more, sl st into the ch-3 or CSDC to join (change to color A) .<64>
Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 2 sts, *[sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-2, sc in the next 3 sts, dc in the next st, dc in the next st while also working around the ch-4 from Rnd 6, dc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts while also working around the ch-5 from Rnd 6, dc in next 2 sts **, dc in next st while also working around the ch-4 from Rnd 6, dc in next st **, sc in next 3 sts, repeat from * three times more ending the last repeat at **, sl st in first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (change to color C). <72>
Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 3 sts, [sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-2, *sc in next 18 sts, [sc, ch 3, sc] in the ch-2, repeat from * two times more, sc in the last 14 sts, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (continue with color C). <80>
Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in next 4 sts, ch 4 (skip the corner/ch-2), *sc in next 20 sts, ch 4 (skip the corner/ch-2), repeat from * two times more, sc in the last 15 sts, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (change to color A). <80>
Rnd 11: Ch 3 or CSDC, dc in next 4 sts, *push the ch-4 to the back and 3 double crochet cluster in the ch-2 from the previous rnd, dc in next 20 sts, repeat from * two times more, push the ch-4 to the back and 3 double crochet cluster in the ch-2 from the previous rnd, dc in last 15 sts, sl st in ch-3 or CSDC to join (change to color C).
Rnd 12: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 4 sts, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the ch-4 from round 10, *sc in the next 20 sts, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in the ch-4 from round 10, repeat from * two times more, sc in the last 15 sts, sl st into the first sc (skipping over the ch-1) to join (change to color A). <104>
Rnd 13: Ch 3 or CSDC, dc in the next 7 sts, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the corner/ch-2, *dc in the next 26 sts, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the corner/ch-2, repeat from * two times more, dc in the last 19 sts, sl st in ch-3 or CSDC to join (change to color C). <120>
