The Galactica Beanie 

This Two-Toned Crochet features a knit look stitch for the main body with an accent of fun stripes in a raised st. This unisex crochet hat is designed for all and looks great on all genders.

Materials

YARN
Color A- main sample uses Grape
Red Heart Soft 90 (110, 130, 155) yards
and
Color B- main sample uses Scooter
Red Heart Hopscotch 40 (55, 70, 85) yards

HOOK
J10/6.0 mm hook
or hook need to obtain gauge
Featured hook- Furls Odyssey in Purple

The absolute beauty of this unisex crochet hat is that it looks awesome in ALL color combinations. Think outside the box. You can pair almost any solid color with almost any of the colors in Hopscotch. GO CRAZY!!!

H-hdc- Herringbone Half Double Crochet
YO, insert hook in st, YO and draw through the st and the first loop on the hook (two loops remain on hook), YO and draw through two remaining loops on hook. Be sure not to pull the first part of the stitch too tightly.

NOTES

  • If you prefer not to use a magic circle you can ch 3 and slip stitch into the first chain to create a loop.
  • Ch 2 does not count as a stitch.
  • This pattern is worked in turned rounds unless notated.
  • The band is then worked in turned rows worked directly into the hat.
  • Pattern is written in baby with changes for child small adult and large adult in parenthesis. If there is only one st count listed it pertains to all sizes.

Pattern

Rnd 1 (RS): Magic Circle (see special sts), ch 2 and 10 H-hdc (see special sts), sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <10>

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2 H-hdc in each st around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <20>

Rnd 3: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in next st, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <30>

Rnd 4: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, H-hdc in next st, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <40>

Rnd 5: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, H-hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in each of next 3 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. If making baby size do NOT turn. <50>

CHILD and ADULT ONLY
Rnd 6: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, H-hdc in each of next 3 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <60>

SMALL ADULT ONLY
Rnd 7: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, H-hdc in each of next 7 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in each of next 8 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, do not turn. <66>

LARGE ADULT ONLY
Rnd 7: Ch 2, H-hdc in first st, H-hdc in each of next 4 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, *H-hdc in each of next 5 sts, 2 H-hdc in next st, repeat from * around, sl st in top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <70>

ALL SIZES- change to Color B
Next Rnd: Ch 2, hdc in same st and in each st around, sl st in top of the first hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Next Rnd: Ch 1, sl st in front loop only in each st around, be sure not to st tightly, sl st into both loops of the first sl st (skipping over the beg ch-1) to join, then sl st into the first back loop of the previous round to set up for next row, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Next Rnd: Ch 2, hdc in same st and in each back loop of the previous round, sl st into top of the first hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Repeat last two rounds consecutively one time

Change to Color A
Next Rnd:
Ch 2, H-hdc in same st and in each st around, sl st into top of the first H-hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, turn work. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Repeat last round two times- do not turn on the last repeat.

Change to Color B
Next Rnd: Ch 2, hdc in same st and in each st around, sl st in top of the first hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Next Rnd: Ch 1, sl st in front loop only in each st around, be sure not to st tightly, sl st into both loops of the first sl st (skipping over the beg ch-1) to join, then sl st into the first back loop of the previous round to set up for next row, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

Next Rnd: Ch 2, hdc in same st and in each st around, sl st in top of the first hdc (skipping beginning ch-2) to join, do not turn. <50 (60, 66, 70)>

BAND- Change to Color A
The last row of the hat will be referred to as the ‘base row’
Row 1: Ch 7, turn work

Row 2: sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 4 chs, sc2tog over next ch and the first st on the base row, sl st into the next st on the base row, ch 1 and turn work. <6>

Row 3: sc in the blo in the next 5 sts, sc in both loops of the last st, turn work. <6>

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in both loops of the first sc, sc in the blo of the next 4 sts, sc2tog over next ch and the first st on the base row, sl st into the next st on the base row, ch 1 and turn work. <6>

Repeat last two rows consecutively until all the sts on the base row are worked. Fasten off, leaving long tail for seaming.

Turn hat inside out and mattress seam the band, weave in ends. Be sure to weave in the ends of the magic circle securely. Turn right side out and wear your new cre8tion!
