When I stumbled a crossed this crochet pattern a couple days ago, I just knew I had to make it. The perfect solution for those plastic bags I have had hanging on the back of a kitchen chair for the past several years as they wait to either be reused or recycled. I am really not sure why I never thought of this before because my mom has had one made out of fabric for years. I was especially drawn to this pattern because of the bobbles. I don’t know why but for some reason lately I am super drawn to bobbles and that casual boho-chick vibe.

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Plastic Bag Holder?

• 190 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton in the color Linen
• H8/5mm Crochet Hook
• Darning needle for weaving in ends.
• Scissors
• Stitch markers
• Ponytail holder
• Plastic Bag Holder Crochet Pattern, either the free version or Ad Free PDF from A Crafty Concept

Material Notes:

This pattern called for one skein of Dishie Cotton but because I did not have that yarn and was in a hurry, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton in the color Linen. Since the skein was slightly smaller at 180 yards instead of 190, I had to use a little bit of a second skein. I have never used Dishie Cotton before so I am not sure how that compares to I Love This Cotton, but based off pictures it looks like it would be similar to Lily’s Sugar’n Cream. I am planning on making one with that yarn soon to compare the two.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Plastic Bag Holder?

This one took me a bit longer than I expected. I believe it took me about 3 hours to finish, working on it off-and-on throughout the day but I am assuming it wouldn’t take as long once you have made a couple so this could be a great market prep item.

Measurements:

Finished holder measures about 15″ long by 6″ wide when lying flat.

Gauge:

With H/5mm hook: 8 sc and 5 rows of hdc = 2″.

Pattern Notes:

Overall, this crochet pattern was pretty simple and beginner friendly. It basically uses two stitches but creates a super fun texture to give the holder more style to fit in with your home decor. The trickiest part was keeping the seam that was created by joining after each round from spiraling, but Ashley gave a great tip on how to do that.

I think these holders would be great to bring to markets, especially in the warmer months when it is harder to decide what to bring. They would also make great housewarming gifts (if plastic bags are still used in your area) because they are a functional item that most people don’t think of but would get a lot of use out of.

So grab yourself some cotton yarn and a ponytail holder and make yourself your own fun, functional, and stylish plastic bag holder to finally have a home for all those plastic grocery bags that seem to multiply faster than you can get them to the recycling center.
