I went back to my Super Chunky Brett Haylee Scarf over on my sister blog, EyeLoveKnots, to give it an update, and add a video tutorial. Since I made this scarf several years ago, I just started a new sample to use for the video tutorial, and that sparked another scarf design – this one, the worsted weight version of the Brett Haylee Scarf.

Brett Haylee is an easy crochet line that features simple half double crochet stitches worked in the back loop only to create a beautiful texture and ribbed fabric. This is a beginner friendly series, and this scarf is great project to pair with watching your favorite TV show or movie. You don’t even need to count rows if you don’t want to, just use a soft tape measure to measure as you go, and stop at the length desired.

I’ve used Red Heart Super Saver for my scarf, but you can use any worsted weight yarn from your stash – pick your favorite! If the finished size is essential to you, then check your gauge, but if not, then just start crocheting. There are 4 sizes included so you can make matching scarves for everybody in the family!

What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Ribbed Scarf?

• 105 (210, 305, 410) Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in the Charcoal colorway for the Adult Small size
• H8/5mm Crochet Hook – I love my ergonomic hooks from SiennasBowtique on Etsy
• Tapestry Needle
• Soft Tape Measure (if Gauge is essential to you)

Similar Yarns: Bernat’s Super Value, Premier Yarns Everyday Soft, Lion Brand’s Heartland, WeCrochet Brava

Cozier Yarns (Wool Blends): Lion Brand Wool Ease, Berroco Vintage, Emma’s Washable Worsted, WeCrochet Swish

If the finished size isn’t essential to you, you can even switch out the worsted weight yarn for bulky/chunky weight to make an even cozier scarf.

If you have concerns about using Red Heart Super Saver and similar because of the roughness and stiffness of the fabric, I have a couple tips!

• If the yarn is too rough for your hands to crochet with, remove the skein wrapper, place the skein into a mesh lingerie bag (I bought mine at JoAnn’s), then machine wash it by itself on the gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Once it’s finished, toss it into the dryer on low heat – you may need to run it through 2 – 3 times to get the center dry.
• To add softness and better drape to the finished piece, crochet in it’s entirety and weave in the ends, then wash and dry in the same manner (with or without the lingerie bag) or simply dry once with a dryer sheet.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Ribbed Scarf?

I worked up the adult small size in just over 3 hours, 15 minutes.

Measurements:

• Toddler: 4 1/8″ by 30″
• Child: 5 5/8″ by 45 1/4″
• Adult Small: 6 1/8″ by 60 1/8″
• Adult Large: 7 1/8″ by 70 1/4″

Gauge (Not Essential):

In Pattern: 16 HDC by 11 Rows = 4 1/8″ Wide by 4 1/2″ Tall

The easiest way to take gauge is to work in pattern, and measure your work after at least Row 5 to see if it matches the given width measurement, then continue working in pattern, and periodically check the length to see if it matches the given length measurement. Easy peasy!

• BLO – Back Loop Only
• HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

The reason we are working the first and last stitches into both loops is to create a cleaner, straighter edge.

R2 – 76 (115, 153, 179): Chain 1, turn. in both loops: HDC into the 1st HDC, in BLO only: HDC into the next 14 (20, 22, 26) HDC, in both loops: HDC into the last HDC. [16 (22, 24, 28) HDC]

Fasten off, and weave in ends.
