Spring is a great time for shawls. Lightweight shawls can be worn well into summer depending on your temperatures. A shawl is perfect for keeping your shoulders warm in the cool breezes. Especially in the early morning and evening hours.
About a year ago I bought this beautiful book “It’s a Wrap” by Bernadine Graham. I chose to make Rebecca. Rebecca features a lacy fan stitch in a cornucopia shape. After a couple of set up rows, it’s a two row repeat until you get the size you want. The book is filled with beautiful shawls of all shapes and sizes! It was hard to choose one and I will definitely be making more of the designs in this book.
At this time Bernadine does not sell the patterns from her book individually. However she does have several other shawl patterns. You can find her on Etsy or Ravelry.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Shawl?
- 874 yards of Fingering Weight Yarn – I used Cotton Kings Sultan in Pink Dragon Agate
- G6/4mm hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Blocking Mats and Pins (optional but highly recommended for this design)
- Rebecca Shawl, Paid Crochet Pattern from “It’s a Wrap” Book from Amazon
Material Notes:
For my shawl I used Cotton Kings Sultan in Pink Dragon Agate. This is 100% cotton but a cotton blend, like Scheepjes Whirl would work nicely as well. The design is intended for lighter weight yarns, but if you wanted a heavier shawl you could use a thicker yarn.
I didn’t quite use all of the cake, I had a few yards left. I used the remaining yarn to make a pair of earrings.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Shawl:
I worked on my shawl for a week, working a couple hours per day. I estimate that it took me around 10 hours to make this shawl.
Measurements:
Approximately 45″ x 28″ on the long side and 1.5″ on the short side. Because of the irregular shaping this shawl is difficult to measure. I measured along the top edge making it as straight as possible.
Gauge:
4 fans and 8 rows is approximately 4″ after blocking.
Pattern Notes:
I made one slight change to my shawl. On the last two rows I didn’t add the increase to give my shawl a more substantial and rounded edge. Additionally, I highly recommend blocking this shawl to open up the lace and help it lay nice and flat.
Overall this shawl was fairly easy to make and I love the final results!
