Cathedral Convertible Cowl

This convertible cowl pattern can be worn so many different ways. I love the detail the front post stitches give, especially mixed with the shell stitches.

1 skein Red Heart with Love or 370 yards any comparable worsted weight yarn

MATERIALS
6.0 mm (J) Hook
Yarn needle

DIFFICULTY
Easy to Intermediate

FINISHED SIZE
20″ wide by 12 ½” tall
40″ circumference

GAUGE
12sts and 8 rows in dc with 6.0mm (I) hook

STITCH GUIDE
ch(s)- chain(s), st(s)- stitch(es), dc- double crochet, hdc- half double crochet,

SPECIAL STITCHES

fhdc– foundation half double crochet
Chain 2 (counts as 1st fhdc). Yarn over and insert hook in 2nd chain from hook. *Yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop creating a sl st, (this is an important step but easy to forget). Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on hook. This completes the second fhdc (remember your 1st ch2 counted as the 1st fdc). To stitch the next fhdc, yarn over and insert the hook into the sl st made in the 2nd fhdc and repeat from *

fpdc– front post double crochet
same as double crochet except instead of crocheting in the normal space you insert hook under post in previous round (from front to back)

fptr– front post treble (triple) crochet
same as treble (triple) crochet Except instead of crocheting in the normal space you insert hook under post in previous round (from front to back).
[tr- treble crochet- yarn over TWO times, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over and pull through stitch (four loops on hook), yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through two more loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook).]

NOTES

  • Each round begins with Ch3 (counts as first dc) and ends with sl st into the Ch3, unless otherwise noted
  • This pattern can be adjusted for any size shoulder.  Simply measure around your shoulders and upper body with your arms down.  Add 1-2″ to that length and crochet your fhdc to that measurement.  Must be in multiples of 8.

PATTERN

Round 1: FHDC 112 (measures 40”). Join with sl st to join a ring.

Round 2: Ch3. 1dc in the next hdc and every hdc around.

Round 3: Ch3. 1dc in the next dc. 1fpdc in each of the next two dcs. *1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next two dcs.  Repeat from * around.

Rounds 4-6: Ch3. 1dc in the next dc. 1fpdc in each of the next two fpdcs. *1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next two fpdcs.  Repeat from * around.

Round 7: Sl st into the next 2dcs. Sl st in between the next 2fpdcs. [Ch3. 2dc. Ch2. 3dc] in the same sp. 1fptr in each of the next 2fpdcs. *[3dc. Ch2. 3dc] in between the next 2fpdcs. 1fptr in each of the next 2fpdcs. Repeat from * around.

Rounds 8-16: Sl st into the next 2dcs. Sl st into the Ch2 sp of the first cluster. [Ch3. 2dc. Ch2. 3dc] in the same sp. 1fptr in each of the next 2fptrs. *[3dc. Ch2. 3dc] in the next Ch2. 1fptr in each of the next 2fptrs. Repeat from * around.

Round 17: Ch3. 1dc in the next st. 1fpdc in the next dc. Skip the next Ch2. 1fpdc in the next dc. 1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next 2fpdcs. *1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in the next dc. Skip the next Ch2. 1fpdc in the next dc. 1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next 2fpdcs. Repeat from * around.

Rounds 18-21: Ch3. 1dc in the next dc. 1fpdc in each of the next 2fpdcs. *1dc in each of the next 2dcs. 1fpdc in each of the next 2fpdcs. Repeat from * around.

Round 22: Ch2. 1hdc in every st around. Sl st into the top of the Ch2 to join round. Fasten off and weave in ends.

OPTIONAL FINISHING

Ch150. Make pompom on one end. Weave through the center of the 4th shell down, being sure to always be under the post sts (never on top). Secure second pompom other end.
