Crochet hook size G-6 (4mm) or size to obtain correct gauge

4 Shells and 8 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in Shell pat.
SPECIAL STITCHES
Fhdc (foundation half double crochet): Ch 3 (counts as first foundation ch and first fhdc), yo and pull up a loop in 3rd ch from hook (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through 1 loop (foundation ch made), yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook (hdc made) – fhdc complete, 2 fhdc total including beg ch. * Yo and pull up a loop in foundation ch of last fhdc made, (3 loops on hook), yo and draw through 1 loop (foundation ch made), yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook (hdc made) – fhdc complete; rep from * to desired number of fhdc.
Fpdc (front post double crochet): yo, insert hook from front-to back-to front around post of indicated st and pull up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops] twice
Hdc2tog (half double crochet 2 together): (Yo, pull up a loop) in each of 2 indicated sts, yo and draw through all 5 loops on hook.
Shell: (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in same st or sp.
Beg Shell (Beginning Shell): Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in first st or sp.
Inc Shell (Increase Shell): (Dc, ch 1, 2 dc, ch 1, dc) in indicated st or sp.

Note: The flat version of Shells pat (worked back and forth in rows, instead of rnds) is included here to make gauge swatching easier. In the actual garment, Shell pat is always worked in the rnd.
Row 1: Fhdc a multiple of 4 sts plus 1.
Row 2: Turn, Beg Shell in first st, * sk 3 sts, Shell in next st; rep from * to end.
Row 3: Turn, sl st in each of first 2 dc and in next ch-1 sp, Beg Shell in same ch-1 sp, Shell in each ch-1 sp to end.
Rep Row 3 only for Shell pat.
Shell Pattern (worked in the rnd over a multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1 (RS): Beg Shell in first st, * sk 3 sts, Shell in next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp.
Rnd 2: Turn, Beg Shell in same sp as last sl st, Shell in each ch-1 sp around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. [Sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp] for all rounds except for last Rnd 2 repeat of body and sleeves.
Rep Rnd 2 only for Shell pat.

- Stripe to your heart’s delight! To change colors, work the final sl st of the rnd with the new color.
- You may add extra Shell pat rows to the Sleeve to make this a long-sleeve top.

Rnd 1 (RS): Fhdc 72, join with sl st in first st.
Rnd 2: Do not turn at beg of this rnd, ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), * hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * around, join with sl st beg ch 2 – 96 sts.
Rnd 3 (Shell setup rnd): Do not turn at beg of this rnd, Beg Shell in first st, sk 3 sts, Shell in next st, sk 3 sts, Inc Shell in next st, [sk 3 sts, Shell in next st] 8 times, sk 3 sts, Inc Shell in next st, work [ ] twice, sk 3 sts, Inc Shell in next st, work [ ] 8 times, sk 3 sts, Inc Shell in next st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp – 20 Shells, 4 Inc Shells, 28 ch-1 sps.
Pm in first ch-1 sp, 5th ch-1 sp, 15th ch-1 sp, and 19th ch-1 sp. After each subsequent Yoke rnd, move each marker to the ch-1 sp directly above it.
Next Rnd: (inc rnd): Turn, beg Shell in same space, * Shell in each ch-1 sp to 1 sp before marker, Inc Shell in ch-1 sp just before marked sp; rep from * 3 more times, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp – 24 Shells, 4 Inc Shells, 30 (30, 30, 32, 32, 32) ch-1 sps.
Rep the last rnd 2 more times – 32 Shells, 4 Inc Shells, 40 ch-1 sps.
Without turning, work Rnd 2 of Shell pat.

Turn work.
You should now be facing the RS. Remove all markers and proceed to Body.
BODY
Rnd 1 (RS, divide for Body and Sleeves): Beg V-st in first sp, mark the shell that Vst is placed in AND the ch-1 sp made by the Vst, * 11 Shells for Sleeve, ch 1 for underarm, V-st in next ch-1 sp, mark the shell that Vst is placed in AND the ch-1 sp made by the Vst, Shell in each of next 15 ch-1 sps, * V-st in next ch-1 sp, mark the shell that Vst is placed in AND the ch-1 sp made by the Vst; rep from * to * once more, join with sl st in 3rd of beg ch-4, sl st in next ch-1 sp – 30 Shells and 4 V-sts.
Rnd 2 (RS): Do not turn at beg of this rnd, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), * V-st in underarm ch-1, dc in next V-st, Shell in each of next 15 ch-1 sps, * dc in next V-st, work from * to * once more, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp –32 ch-1 sps.
Rnd 3: Turn, Beg Shell in same sp as last sl st, Shell in each ch-1 sp around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp – 32 Shells.
Work 23 more rnds in Shell pat.
Bottom Edging
Note: Do not turn at beg of any of the following rnds, the edging will be worked with RS facing only.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3, (counts as 1 dc), dc in each dc around, skipping all ch-1 sps, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 – 128 sts.
Rnds 2-4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), fpdc around next dc, *dc in next st, fpdc around the next dc; rep from * around.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, join with sl st in beg sc.
Fasten off.
SLEEVES
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st in the first marked st, just before underarm.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in the next marked st, V-st in unused loops of underarm ch-1, dc in each of the next 2 marked st/sps, Shell in each ch-1 sp around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 – 12 ch-1 sps.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), skip next dc, shell in next ch-1 sp, skip next dc, shell in each of the remaining ch-1 sps. sl st in next dc and in next ch sp, sl st in next dc and in next ch sp – 12 ch-1 sps.
Remove markers for this Sleeve.
Rnd 3: Work in Shell pat – 12 Shells.
Work 4 more rnds in Shells pat.
Cuff Edging
Note: Do not turn at beg of any of the following rnds, the edging will be worked with RS facing only.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in each dc around, skipping all ch-1 sps, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3 – 48 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), fpdc around next dc, *dc in next st, fpdc around the next dc; rep from * around
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around, join with sl st in beg sc.
Fasten off.
Work other sleeve the same.
NECK EDGING
Pm at each corner of neck opening – 4 markers placed.
Note: Two options are given for the neck edging. The first (wider neck opening) produces a boat neck like collar. If you prefer a smaller neckline, skip this section and proceed to the second (narrower neck opening).
Wider Neck Opening
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st at back neck.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), * hdc in each st to 1 st before marker, hdc2tog over next 2 sts and move marker to hdc2tog just made; rep from * 3 more times, hdc in each st to end, join with sl st beg ch 2 – 68 sts,
Fasten off.
Narrower Neck Opening
With RS facing, join yarn with sl st at back neck.
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as 1 hdc), * hdc in each st to 3 sts before marker, [hdc2tog over next 2 sts] 3 times and move marker to center hdc2tog of the 3 just made; rep from * 3 more times, hdc in each st to end, join with sl st beg ch 2 – 60 sts.
Fasten off.
Weave in all ends.
