The Denali Cowl is a great textured cowl design. It features a mix of single crochet and double crochet used in alternating cluster stitches to create a subtle texture and drape. This design can be made in a variety of color combinations. Each color change highlights the change in stitches.
This textured cowl is created using Whims Merino by Furls Crochet. Whims is a Merion/Nylon blend that is made in a Z Twist, this means that your yarn won’t unravel as you are working with it. The fiber content along with the twist gives this yarn amazing stitch definition. Furls now has Whims Merino in both DK and Worsted.

Fhdc- Foundation Half Double Crochet – Tutorial
Chain 3 (counts as first fhdc). Yarn over (YO) and insert hook in 3rd chain from hook *YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), YO and pull through 1 loop creating a chain, (this is an important step but easy to forget), YO and pull through all three loops on hook. This completes the second fhdc (remember your first ch3 counted as the first fhdc). To stitch the next fhdc, yarn over and insert the hook into the chain made in the 2nd fhdc and repeat from * to desired length or until the desired amount of sts are achieved.
PS- Puff Stitch
Yarn over (YO), insert hook into the indicated st/sp, YO and pull up a loop to the height of a dc st, [YO and insert your hook into the same st/sp, YO and pull up a long loop] 2 times more, you will have 7 loops on your hook, YO and pull through all 7 loops on hook. Finish the puff st with a ch-1.
- Ch 1 does not count as the first st.
- Pattern is worked in turned rounds.
All rnds are done in charcoal with the exception of rnds: 10, 13, 18-21, 26 and 29.
Rnd 1: Fhdc 102, sl st into first fhdc to form a circle, ch 1 and turn work.
Rnd 2: [sc, ch 2, dc] in first st (one simple cluster made), skip 2 sts, [sc, ch 2, puff st] in next st (one puff cluster made), *skip 2 sts, simple cluster, skip 2 sts, puff cluster, repeat from * to end, sl st into the top of the first sc to join, ch 1, turn work. <34 clusters>
Rnd 3: sl st into the top of the puff st from previous row, ch-1, simple cluster in first ch-2, puff cluster in next ch-2, *simple cluster in next ch-2, puff cluster in next ch-2, repeat from * to end, sl st into the top of the first sc to join, ch 1, turn work.
Repeat Rnd 3 for a total of 38 cluster rnds (39 rnds total including fhdc rnd).
Rnd 40: hdc in the top of the first puff st, hdc in each ch-2, sc, puff st and dc around. <102>
