st(s) – stitch(es); ch(s) – chain(s); sp – space; hk – hook; lp(s) – loop(s); sk – skip; yo – yarn over; fsc – foundation single crochet; sc – single crochet; dc – double crochet; sp cl – split cluster; sl st – slip stitch; beg – beginning
SPECIAL STITCHES
- Foundation single crochet (fsc): Ch 2, insert hk in first ch and pull up a lp, yo and pull through first lp on hk (ch made), yo and pull through both lps, first fsc made. *Insert hk into ch from first st, pull up a lp, yo and pull through first lp on hk (ch made), yo and pull through both lps,* next fsc made. Repeat from * for desired number of sts.
- Foundation split cluster – 3 dc over stem of dc just worked leaving last lp of each dc on hk, sk one st, then work 4th dc of sp cl into next st leaving last lp as before (5 lps on hk), yo and pull through all 5 lps.
- Split cluster: 3 dc over stem of dc just worked but leaving last lp of each dc on hook, then work 4th dc into next ch sp leaving last lp as before (5 lps on hk), yo and pull through all 5 lps
- Last split cluster: 3 dc over stem of dc just worked leaving last lp of each dc on hk, then work 4th dc into top of beginning ch 2 of previous row leaving last lp as before (5 lps on hk), yo and pull through all 5 lps.

Be sure to count clusters on rows as it is easy to accidentally decrease by skipping making the last split cluster of the row.
