Winter Waves Chevron Semi Slouch
Free Crochet Pattern
Chevrons are a stitch that is really quite easy, though it appears to be difficult, at least in my opinion. The process is simple; the peaks are made up of extra stitches that are then taken away in the valleys. This is completed with increases and decreases at specific intervals.
Chevrons are easier to complete in a row, as in a blanket, scarf or cowl, but it can be performed in the round as well, it just takes a little more diligence.
This pattern may seem difficult at first, but once you understand the concept it will be old hat (pun intended, lol).

Since hats made in the round need to be increased in the beginning rounds, the peaks and valleys are performed differently in the first few (increasing) rounds of the hat. Once the hat is increased to the proper size then the rest of the hat is simpler to make and the increases/decreases will make more sense.
This pattern is written in four sizes, baby (fits most babies 6mo to 12mo), toddler (fits most toddlers 18mo to 3years), children (4-14 years) and adult (14 years to adult). Finished dimensions are included in the pattern, if you find you need the finished hat to be slightly larger or slightly smaller I recommend using a hook a size up or down, depending on your needs.
Materials
Red Heart with Love or a comparable worsted weight yarn
6.0mm (J) hook- or hook needed to obtain gauge
Embroidery needle
Gauge
Measure in pattern
4 rounds = 5”
Finished Sizes
Baby- 13 ½ ” circ and 5 ½” tall
Toddler- 18” circ and 6 ½” tall- comfortably fits my 3yo
Child- 19 ½” circ and 7 ¼” tall- comfortably fits my 14yo
Adult- 22” circ and 7 ¾” tall- fits me perfect
- The first four rounds of this hat are the same for all sizes. After the 4th round, skip to the appropriate size to complete the hat
- Ch3 counts as the first dc in dc/chevron rounds
- Ch1 counts as the first sc of sc rounds
- Sl st into the top of the ch3 (or Ch1) to join every round
- Change color on first sl st of each row (not the sl st to join rounds)
- Insert hook into st, yarn over with NEW color and pull up loop (one loop of each color on hook). Draw new color through old color to complete color change. You may want to tie short tails together at every color change
- Change colors as desired
- Make sure you are sl stitching into the first st of every round as indicated in the pattern, or your counts, valleys and peaks will be off
- Measurements are at the end of each increasing row in parenthesis
