Free Christmas Hat Crochet Pattern
Trees go Round – baby, toddler and small child sizes
My grandmother was an avid knitter. She made so many things that I still own and treasure to this day. One of the things she made as an adorable jointed bear with a vest and Christmas tree lined hat. My daughter loves this bear and always steals it from my son’s room where it resides (she has her own but for some reason she likes this one more, must be the hat). She has taken to wearing the hat around the house.
Well after seeing this hat day in and out I became inspired to create my very own tree lined hat, but in crochet which is my medium of choice. I wasn’t sure I could do it since I never crocheted any designs into anything before, but it was easy. I decided to share this pattern, just in time for you to make your little one his or her own Christmas Cap! Have fun hookin’ this one and watch for the adult version that is coming soon.
Abbreviations and Stitches used:
st– stitch
mc/r– magic circle/ring
yo– yarn over
sc– single crochet
insert hook, yarn over, pull through (two loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops
hdc– half double crochet-
yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all three loops
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn of your choice in red, white and green. I used a combination of Vanna’s Choice and Red Heart
5.0m hook for baby size
5.5 mm hook for toddler size
6.0 mm size for small child (or see adult and child size pattern HERE)
tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Notes:
Pattern calls for you to change color at the top of the stitch- after you complete the stitch you will be left with one loop on the hook, yo new color and sl st through old color, be sure to pull tail of old color tight so that only new color shows on hook, continue to st with new color until you need to change back to other color, switch back in the same way. Be sure to keep your tails tight when you change colors to keep the work neat.

yarn will travel with you throughout the design portion of the pattern, do not cut yarn during this part, stitch over color not being used.
Pattern: all worked in the round
Round 1: Mc/r with 8hdc
Round 2: 8hdc- weave tail of mc in at this point
Round 3: Increase in every 4th st for 10hdc
Round 4: Increase in every 5th st for 12hdc
Round 5: 12hdc
Round 6: 12hdc
Round 7: 12hdc
Round 8: 12hdc
Round 9: Increase in every 4th st for 15hdc
Round 10: Increase in every 3rd st for 20hdc
Round 11: Increase in every 2nd st for 30hdc
Round 12: Increase in every 3rd st for 40hdc
Round 13: Increase in every 5th st for 48hdc
Round 14: 48hdc
Round 15: 48hdc
Round 16: 48hdc
Round 17: Change to white, crochet over red and cut after a few stitches, leaving a 4in tail to weave in at end – sc around <48> (cut red)
(Do NOT cut yarn for the next section, read notes above) using sc begin row with white *at the top of 5th st (read notes above) pick up and change to green and sc (with green) into 6th sp., change back to white and continue from * <48>
Round 19: Using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into next st (2sc of green), at top of second green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next 4 st, repeat from * <48>
Round 20: Using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into the next TWO st (3sc of green), at top of third green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next 3st, repeat from * <48>
Round 21: Using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into the next THREE st (4sc of green), at top of fourth green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next two sp, repeat from <48>
Round 22: Using sc begin row with white, when you get to the first green st of this row sc two more white sts, *change to green at top of st, 1sc with green, change back to white at top of st, 1sc with white into the next 5sps, repeat from * <48>
Round 23: You can cut your green at this point as you will no longer be using it, leave a 4in tail to weave in at end. Using white sc around <48>
Round 24: Change to red, crochet over white and cut after a few stitches, leaving a 4in tail to weave in at end, hdc around <48>
Round 25: 48hdc
Round 26: 48hdc
Round 27: Chain 2 and turn, work around in opposite direction, 48hdc
Round 28: 48hdc
Round 29: 48sc to finish, fasten off and leave a 12″ long tail.
Round 30: Weave in all your other ends, leaving long red tail
Round 31: Fold up brim to where bottom meets first row of red and tack around using long tail and tapestry needle every 2nd-3rd st, do not do this tight.
Round 32: Make a tassel/pompom- hold fingers open and wrap white and green together around fingers several times until desired thickness of pom is reached. Take a 6 inch long piece of red yarn and weave through top of bundle. Using green yarn tie the bundle about 3/4 of an inch from top, tie a few times to make sure it is secure. Cut bottom of tassel to make your pom.
Round 33: Using red yarn weave finished pom to the top of the hat.
Round 34: Fold hat down and at bottom of tassel (between tassel and pom) secure to place on hat where brim was secured.
