This design was originally inspired by a Knit version of this hat that my grandmother made for me as a child.  My daughter now covets this hat and walks around with it on all day.  It inspired me to make her a crochet version, you can find the toddler pattern here.  I wanted to share this free Christmas crochet pattern with you.  Here is the adult version so that you and your toddler can match!  Hope you enjoy!

Abbreviations and Stitches used:

st– stitch

mc/r- magic circle/ring- written and video tutorial HERE

sc– single crochet-
Insert hook, yarn over, pull through (two loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops

hdc– half double crochet-
yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all three loops

dc– double crochet-
yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops.

Dec 2 Tog– decrease two together- (sc and dc)-
for sc– insert hook, yarn over, pull through, (two loops on hook), insert hook in next space, yarn over, pull through, (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all three loops
for dc– insert hook, yarn over, pull through (two loops on hook), insert into next space, yarn over, pull through, (three loops on hook) yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over again and pull through last two loops

Materials:

Worsted Weight Yarn in red, white and green.  I used all Red Heart for this one
6.0mm hook for Adult size
5.5mm hook for  Older Child size
5.0mm hook for Younger Child size, see toddler pattern as well
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

 

Notes

• This is one of the first patterns I ever wrote, it is not written in the method I write my patterns in now… however it is still easy to understand.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to leave a comment and I will get back to you.  Enjoy!
• Be sure to use minimal tension when making the “tree” portion of this hat or it will be too tight.
• Pattern calls for you to change color at the top of the stitch- after you complete the stitch you will be left with one loop on the hook, yo new color and sl st through old color, be sure to pull tail of old color tight so that only new color shows on hook, continue to st with new color until you need to change back to other color, switch back in the same way.  Be sure to keep your tails tight when you change colors to keep the work neat yarn will travel with you throughout the design portion of the pattern, do not cut yarn during this part, stitch over color not being used.  *Alternately you can use the method shown here, brought to you by Moogly.  (I have used this method in other applications but have not tried it in this pattern)

Switching colors in the middle of a row

For a seamless look on this hat you can use both of the methods described HERE.  Use method 1  for the sc portion of this hat and method 2 for the dc portions.

 

Pattern:

1. Mc/r with 10hdc.  Written and video tutorial HERE

17. Change to white, crochet over red and cut after a few stitches leaving a 4in tail to weave in at end- place 2sc in first st then 2sc in 5^th st.  Increase in every 5^th st for remainder of round for 67sc
18. (Do NOT cut yarn for the next section, read notes above) using sc begin row with white *at the top of 5th st (read notes above) pick up and change to green and sc (with green) into 6th sp., change back to white and continue from * <67>
19. using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into next st  (2sc of green), at top of second green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next 4 st, repeat from * <67>
20. using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into the next TWO st (3sc of green), at top of third green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next 3st, repeat from * <67>
21. using sc begin row with white, *when you get to the sp directly before green st of previous row, change to green at top of st, (with green) sc into green st and sc into the next THREE st (4sc of green), at top of fourth green st change to white, 1sc in each of the next two sp, repeat from <67>
22. using sc begin row with white, when you get to the first green st of this row sc two more white sts, *change to green at top of st, 1sc with green, change back to white at top of st, 1sc with white into the next 5sps, repeat from * <67>
23. you can cut your green at this point as you will no longer be using it, leave a 4in tail to weave in at end.  Using white dec2tog every 5^th st (you will end on 4 and will not decrease in last set of stitches) <57>
24. change to red, crochet over white and cut after a few stitches, leaving a 4in tail to weave in at end, dc around <57>

27. chain 2 and turn, work around in opposite direction, 57dc (ch 2 is counted as 1^st dc)

29. 57sc to finish, fasten off and leave a 12″ long tail.
30. weave in all your other ends, leaving long red tail
31. fold up brim to where bottom meets first row of red and tack around using long tail and tapestry needle every 2nd-3rd  st, do not do this tight.
32. Make a tassle/pompom- hold fingers open and wrap white and green together around fingers several times until desired thickness of pom is reached.  take a 6 inch long piece of red yarn and weave through top of bundle.  Using green yarn tie the bundle about 3/4 of an inch from top, tie a few times to make sure it is secure.  Cut bottom of tassle to make your pom.
33. Using red yarn weave finished pom to the top of the hat.
34. fold hat down and at bottom of tassle (between tassle and pom) secure to place on hat where brim was secured.
