Pricing Crochet Items for Sale

February 25, 2013 By: Lorene

Always Worried About Pricing Your Crochet Items for Sale???

When asking colleagues about their number one concern with selling their crocheted items they all responded the same way.  “How much do I sell my items for?”  Typically I would use a general formula and then tweak it as need be.  I would take the cost of my materials and times that number by 3-4 depending on the item.  For example, yarn cost was $4 for a basic hat so I would start at $12-16 and then add a couple dollars for any embellishments.  If it was a character hat that required lots of appliques I would add a couple dollars more, typically selling my hats for between $16-24.  Sometimes the formula cost would be very high (blankets and large items) and sometimes it would be really low (my crochet ring necklaces or flower pins for example), so I would adjust accordingly (when I say accordingly I really mean I would guess.)

Doing it this way did not take into account my operating costs above and beyond yarn and time.  What about my electric costs, internet usage, etc, that went along with it?  Shouldn’t I be compensated for that as well?  That formula also didn’t take into thought my audience, who I will be selling to, or where I will be selling.  What about my patterns, or my time if I want to teach a class?

Sedruola of Yarn Obsession has put an end to the question of how to price your crocheted items.  Her ebook Pricing Crochet Fairly for Maximum Profit delves in depth into the subject of pricing your work.

I thought I was quite happy with my pricing formula, the formula widely used by many in the business.  Until I read her book.  It opened my eyes to things I had never considered about pricing my work.

Pricing Fairly does not only cover how to charge for finished items but also explains and gives formulas for how to price crochet patterns and your time for public speaking and/or teaching.

You will also need to take into consideration where you sell your finished work and where you will be selling.  Sedruola will teach you how to price for selling online or in a personal boutique, craft fairs, flea markets, and much more.  It will explore venues you may not of thought of before.

This book should also be called “All You Need to Consider Before Starting Your own Crochet Business And Ways to Make Money with your Crochet” as it also touches upon marketing basics, getting your patterns or articles published, teaching crochet and more.

I recommend Pricing Crochet Fairly for Maximum Profit to anyone in the crochet business, in any modality.  Whether you are just starting out or have been crocheting and selling for years, this book has something for you.

Aren’t you and your business worth the $7.98 investment?

This very affordable ebook is available exclusively on Amazon.com and can be found here.
