Daisy Delight Flower Pin or Barrette

This flower makes an adorable pin, brooch, or hair clip.  It also looks great as an embellishment on any finished item.   They are quick and easy to work up and will get you a big bang for your buck.  Each flower (in thread) costs me approximately $0.40 to make and I sell them for $4.00.  That’s a 1000% mark up.  You can’t beat that with a stick.  These are one of my best selling items in boutique settings and they still leave plenty of wiggle room for me to make a profit.

What You’ll Need:

1 skein of embroidery thread in flower color
1 skein of embroidery thread in leave color (optional)
1 bar pin
1 small (1/4”) button
1.50mm thread hook (you could also use a 1.35 or 1.75)
small wide eyed craft needle
needle nose pliers
scissors

  

Notes:

This pin can also be made using any yarn of your choice.  It will create a much bigger finished flower but is also very cute (I recommend using a slightly smaller hook than what the yarn calls for, I used a 4.0mm for mine).  Use sewing or embroidery thread to attach to pin.  You will

I highly recommend unwinding your skein of embroidery thread onto a floss divider 1st to keep it from tangling as you work

 

 Abbreviations and Stitches used:

ch– chain

st– stitch

sl st– slip stitch
insert hook, yarn over, pull through, (two loops on hook), pull loop closest to hook through other loop

sc– single crochet
insert hook, yarn over, pull through (two loops on hook), yarn over, pull through both loops

hdc– half double crochet
yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through all three lo

dc– double crochet
yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull through (three loops on hook), yarn over, pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops

Finished Pin:

In thread

1.25’’ without leaves
1.5’’ with leaves

In worsted weight yarn with 4.0mm hook

Nearly 3” without leaves
Little over 3” with leaves

Pattern:
all gauge measurements are in embroidery thread

1. Leaving a 8-10” tail.  ch2 and 6sc in 1^st chain.  Join round with sl st <6> (less than 1cm, approx. 8mm)
2. 2sc in every st around.   Join round with sl st <12> (0.5”)
3. Working in front loops only.  4hdc in 1^st st.  1sl st in next st.  *4hdc in next st.  1sl st in next st.  Repeat from * around <6petals> (just shy of 1”)
4. In back loops of same round.  1sc in 1^st st.  2sc in next st.  *1sc in next st.  2sc in next st.  Repeat from * around.  Sl st into 1^st sc to join round <18>
5. Working in front loops only.  4hdc in 1^st st.   1sl st in next st.  skip next st.  *4hdc in next st.  1sl st in next st.  skip next st.   Repeat from * around <6petals> (just shy of 1.25”)
   
6. In back loops of same round.  1sc in 1^st  st.  1sc in next st.  2sc in next st.  *1sc in next st.  1sc in next st.  2sc in next st.  Repeat from * around.  Sl st into 1st sc to join round <24>
       
7. Working in front loops only.  3hdc in 1^st st.  3hdc in next st.   1sl st in next st.  skip next st.  *3hdc in next st.  3hdc in next st.  1sl st in next st.  skip next st.  Repeat from * around <6petals> (just over 1.25 ”)
   
8. Working in the back loops of the same round, sl st into 1st st and change to the leaf color (insert hook into st, pick up new color and pull the new color through the st).  Cut end of flower color and tie both short tails (one of flower color and one of leaf color) together securely.
         
9. Working with leaf color, 1sl st into each of the next 5 sts.  5hdc, ch2, 5dc in next st.  1sl st in each of the next 2sts.  5hdc, ch2, 5hdc in next st.  1sl st into each of the remaining sts and sl st into 1st sl st to end round.  Fasten off.  Tie the three outside tails together (leaving center/starting tail), and cut short so that it is hidden from the front.  Using long center tail, secure button to center of flower.  You do not have to add a button but you will be able to see bar pin through the center of the flower if you do not.
   
10. Position bar pin in the back center of flower and sew into place using the starting tail.  Weave tail behind pin a couple times to ensure it is secure and cut short.  (check to make sure the pin works before sewing it on, sometimes you will get a defective one).  You will probably need to use the pliers to sew on pin since it is such as small/tight space.

This flower also looks great as a hair accessory, simply sew finished flower on to your choice of barrette.  For use with a bobby pin leave off the last round of petals for a smaller finished look.
