Flower Power Flip Flops
Never have boring flip flops again. This free flip flop flower tutorial is ultra-versatile and super fun. You will begin by adding a crochet base to the straps of the flip flops and then you will attach flowers in your choice of color and size in an asymmetrical pattern. Pattern includes 4 different size flowers and multiple ideas on styles.

ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, hdc – half double crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), sp(s) – space(s), RS – right side,
SPECIAL STITCHES NOTES
- While crocheting strap base, turn flip flop so that toe is facing you.
- Make sure the sts are always on the outer edge of straps
- The flowers can be made interchangeable by attaching sew on snaps to the strap base and flowers.
PATTERN
RIGHT Strap
Row 1 (RS): Begin on inner strap, approx ½” away from to thong; with slip knot on hook, place the working end of the yarn on top of the strap (A), insert hook under strap of flip from outside edge to inside edge, yarn over and sc. Working towards toe thong, place 4 more sc (B). Insert hook underneath toe thong and yarn over, place 1sc (C). Working back up the outer strap, place 20 sc (D &E).
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each of the next 9 sc. sc in each of the next 10 sc. Fasten off. Weave tails underneath the sc loops on straps.
LEFT Strap
Row 1 (RS): Begin on outer strap (at the approximate place where 20sc ended on RIGHT flip flop; with slip knot on hook, place the working end of the yarn on top of the strap, insert hook under strap of flip from outside edge to inside edge, yarn over and sc, place 19 more sc. Insert hook underneath toe thong and yarn over, place 1sc. Working back up the inner strap, place 5 sc. Fasten off.
Row 2: Working on outer strap, join yarn with sl st in the first sc (closest to the toe thong), ch 1, sc in each of the next 9 scs, hdc in each of the next 10 scs. Fasten off. Weave tails underneath the sc loops on straps. Your straps are complete, you can now move on to creating your flowers. If you decide to make the flowers interchangeable than you can stitch a small snap button to the bottom of each flower and in 3-5 places on your crochet strap base.
There are 4 different size flowers; extra small, small, medium and large. Create your flowers in any size and color you like. Some different ideas for styles are available at the end of the flower directions.
Extra Small
Row 1: Leaving a 6-8” tail; ch 12
Row 2: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end – 5 ch 1 sps made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2sc and 1 sl st, in first ch 1 sp (first petal made), 3 sc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps, (4 more petals made). Fasten off, leaving 8-10” tail. Roll strip into a flower, with first petal in center; flower made. Stitch flower together at base.
Small
Row 1: Leaving a 6-8” tail; ch 18
Row 2: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end – 8 ch 1 sps made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2sc and 1 sl st, in first ch 1 sp (first petal made), 3 sc and 1 sl st in each of the next 3 ch 1 sps, (3 more petals made), 3 hdc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made). Fasten off, leaving 8-10” tail. Roll strip into a flower, with first petal in center; flower made. Stitch flower together at base.
Medium
Row 1: Leaving a 6-8” tail; ch 26
Row 2: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end – 12 ch 1 sps made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2sc and 1 sl st, in first ch 1 sp (first petal made), 3 sc and 1 sl st in each of the next 3 ch 1 sps, (3 more petals made), 3 hdc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made), 4 hdc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made). . Fasten off, leaving 8-10” tail. Roll strip into a flower, with first petal in center; flower made. Stitch flower together at base.
Large
Row 1: Leaving a 6-8” tail; ch 34
Row 2: sc in 4th ch from hook (first ch 1 sp made). * Ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * to end – 16 ch 1 sps made.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc and 1 sl st, in first ch 1 sp (first petal made), 3sc and 1 sl st in each of the next 3 ch 1 sps, (3 more petals made), 3 hdc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made), 4 hdc and 1 sl st ineach of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made), 4 dc and 1 sl st in each of the next 4 ch 1 sps (4 more petals made). Fasten off, leaving 8-10” tail. Roll strip into a flower, with first petal in center; flower made. Stitch flower together at base.
Attach flowers to base in any fashion you prefer. Attach flowers as close to flip flop strap as possible.
