Orange Sorbet Cowl
free crochet cowl pattern
This light and airy cowl uses my new favorite stitch pattern. I have spent quite some time working on this combination of stitches, and creating lots of different variations within it. This stitch pattern features a mix of chevron, lace and granny stitches for a visually stunning appearance.
The Orange Sorbet Cowl is designed using a worsted weight, 100% Merino, Wool. It is lightly blocked after finishing to ensure the stitch pattern really shines through.

SPECIAL STITCHES
fdc- foundation double crochet
Chain 4 (counts as the first fdc). Yarn over and insert hook in 4th chain from hook. *Yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 1 loop creating a chain st, (this is an important step but easy to forget). Yarn over again and pull through first two loops on hook (two loops remaining). Yarn over again and pull through last two loops on hook. This completes the second fdc (remember the ch4 counted as the first fdc). To stitch the next fdc, yarn over and insert the hook into the chain made in the 2nd fdc and repeat from *
dc2tog- double crochet two together
yarn over (YO), insert hook into first st, YO and draw up a loop, (three loops on hook), YO and pull through first two loops (two loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop (four loops on hook), YO, pull through first two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining three loops.
dc3tog- double crochet three together
yarn over (YO), insert hook into first st, YO and draw up a stitch, (three loops on hook), YO and pull through first two loops (two loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop (four loops on hook), YO, pull through first two loops on hook (three loops remaining on hook), YO, insert hook in next st, YO and draw up a loop, pull through first two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining four loops.
Even after typing up my pattern with notes I still found mistakes… this is why I end up working up all new patterns 3 or 4 times.
This is what your cowl will look like after completing row 3.
NOTES
- Ch 3 is considered first dc, last st of each row will be placed in the top of the ch-3
- Unless otherwise noted, in rows 2 and beyond, skipped chains are not specified. If pattern tells you do dc in next dc, you will skip any chains in between.

Rows 7-42: Repeat Rows 4, 5 and 6 consecutively
Fasten off leaving approx 18” of yarn to stitch ends together.
ASSEMBLY
Turn piece around so that fastened end tail is on your right. Fold bottom half of cowl toward the back so that both tails are on the same (right) side.
Mattress st one end to the other, stitch for stitch. Each peak from one side will nestle into the valley from the other side. Use one st only in the ch-3 center of peaks.
To make this easier, you may want to place a stitch marker (sm) every 5 sts, work towards the sm, stitch for stitch, and then move sm 5 more sts and repeat. This will ensure that the sts line up perfectly.
FINISHING
Round 1: Attach yarn by sl st along completed side, at seam just made. Ch 1, sc all the way around, *place 2sc in one row end and 3sc in the next row end, repeat from *around, sl st into to the top of the first sc, skipping over the ch-1, to join round. I prefer to put 2sc in the row ends that begin with a dc and 3sc in the row ends that begin with a chain. <105 sc>
Rounds 2 & 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st into the top of the first sc, skipping over the ch-1, to join round.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Repeat for other side.
Block as necessary. I did a wet blocking method, but steam will work just as well.
