The Big Bang Cowl
A free crochet cowl pattern designed by Cre8tion Crochet
This free crochet cowl pattern is the kind you just want to snuggle up in. The Big Bang Cowl features a triangle front and a long, cuddly, cowl. This design uses Big Bang Yarn by Mango Moon and is worked from the tip up. The triangle section is worked in rows and the cowl section is worked in turned rounds.
You can substitute any yarn you like for this design but you will need to adjust your repeats to the desired size.

Big Bang Yarn by Mango Moon in Penny– additional sample and video made with Raj
2 skeins or approx. 164 yards of comparable #5 bulky or “thick and thin” handspun- 100% Merino Wool
MATERIALS
P/10.0m hook- I used my Limited Edition Holly Hook from Furls Crochet
DIFFICULTY

24” circumference and 24” from top to tip
GAUGE
1 repeat and 4 rows = 4”
STITCH GUIDE
ch(s) – chain(s), sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, st(s) – stitch(es), BLO – back loop only, RS – right side, WS – wrong side, sl st – slip stitch
NOTES
- Ch 3 counts as first dc
- Each 5dc makes 1 shell
- Each 5 chs makes 1 loop
- Cowl is worked in repeats of shell rows and loop rows
- An additional shell is added every 2 rows
- Triangle portion of cowl is worked in rows
- Cowl portion of cowl is worked in turned rounds
- If using a different yarn than what is written in pattern, or to change the size of the cowl, you will repeat the row section until the desired final width around neck. Repeat turned rounds section until desired height
- Stitch counts are at the end of each row
PATTERN
Row 1: Ch 5 and join with sl st to form a ring
Row 2: Ch 3 and turn work, place an additional 4 dc in the ring made in row 1 <1shell>
Row 3: Ch 8, mark 3rd ch and turn work (counts as first dc and first ch-5), sc in the center (or 3rd) dc of next shell, ch 5 dc in last dc of same shell <2 loops>
Row 4: Ch 3 and turn work, place an additional 4 dc in the first dc, sc in the first loop, ch 5, sc in the next loop, 5dc in the marked ch <2 shells and 1 loop>
Row 5: Ch 8, mark 3rd ch and turn work (counts ad first dc and first ch-5), sc in the center (or 3rd) dc of first shell, ch 5, skip next sc and sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the center (or 3rd) dc of the next shell, ch 5 dc in the last dc of same shell <4 loops>
Row 6: Ch 3 and turn work, place an additional 4 dc in the first dc, sc in the first loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the next loop, 5dc in the next sc, sc in the next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the next loop, 5dc in the marked ch <3 shells and 2 loops>
Row 7: Ch 8, mark 3rd ch and turn work (counts ad first dc and first ch-5), sc in the center (or 3rd) dc of first shell, *ch 5, skip next sc and sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the center (or 3rd) dc of the next shell, repeat from * until last shell, ch 5, dc in the last dc of same shell <6 loops>
Row 8: Ch 3 and turn work, place an additional 4 dc in the first dc, sc in the first loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the next loop, *5dc in the next sc, sc in the next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, repeat from * until last loop (beginning ch-8), 5dc in the marked ch <4 shells and 3 loops>
Rows 9-14: Repeat Rows 7 and 8 consecutively 3 times (or until desired width- must end with odd number of shells)
You will now close the triangle into the cowl shape and work in turned rounds.
Round 15: Ch 8 mark the 3rd ch and turn work, sc in center/3rd dc from first shell, *ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in center/3rd dc of next shell, repeat from * to last shell, ch 5, dc in the last of last sh, sc in marked ch to join round <7 shells and 7 loops>
Round 16: Ch 3, turn work, 4dc in the base of the joining sc, sc in the next ch-5, ch 5, skip the next sc, sc in the next loop, *5 dc in the next sc, sc in the next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the next loop, repeat from * around, sl st in the beg ch 3 to join round <7 shells and 7 loops>
Round 17: Ch 1, turn work, sl st in the first sc, ch 2, sc in the next ch-5 (mark this sc), ch 5, skip the next sc, sc in the center/3rd dc of the first shell, *ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the center/3rd dc of the next shell, repeat from * to last shell, ch 5, sl st in the marked sc to join round <14 loops>
Round 18: Ch 2, turn work, sc in first loop (mark this sc), ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, *5dc in the next sc, sc in the next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, repeat from * to last loop, 5dc in the last sc, sl st in the marked sc to join round <7 shells and 7 loops>
Round 19: Ch 1, turn work, sl st in next 3 dc, ch 1 and sc in the same st (mark this sc), ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, *ch 5, skip next sc, sc in the center/3rd dc of next shell, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, repeat from * to last loop, ch 5, sl st in marked sc to join <14 loops>
Round 20: Ch 2, turn work, sc in first loop (mark this sc), 5dc in next sc, sc in next loop, *ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, 5dc in next sc, sc in next loop, repeat from * to last loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sl st in marked sc to join round <7 shells and 7 loops>
Round 21: Ch 2, turn work, sc in first loop (mark this sc), ch 5, skip next sc, sc in center/3rd dc of first shell, *ch 5, skip next sc, sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next sc, sc in center/3rd dc of next shell, repeat from * to last shell, ch 5, sl st in marked sc to join <14 loops>
Rows 22 – 29: Repeat rows 18, 19, 20 and 21 consecutively 2x or until desired height
Top Edging
Round 1: Ch 1, turn work, 5sc in first loop, sc in next sc, *5sc in next loop, sc in next sc, repeat from * around, sl st in first sc (skipping over the beg ch-1) to join
Bottom Edging
Round 1: Lay cowl with center point facing away from you, RS down. You will be working into the RS of the center back. Insert hook by sl st in base of center shell, ch 3 and 4dc in same st, sc in next ch space (this is the chain edge of a row), ch 5, *sc in next ch sp, ch 5**, repeat from * to ** around to center point, sc in center point, repeat from * to ** to end, sl st in beg ch-3 to join.
Round 2: Do not turn, sl st to center/3rd dc of shell, ch 1 and sc in same st, *ch 5, sc in next ch loop, 5dc in next sc, sc in the next ch loop**, repeat from * to ** till the second to last ch loop before center shell/point, ch 5, sc in next ch loop, 5dc in center shell/point, sc in the next ch loop, repeat from * to ** to end, sl st in the beginning sc to join.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends, block as necessary
