I am interested in trying my hand at some tapestry crochet patterns, and was needing a basic pattern to start with. May I present to you the Shay Cosmetic Bag or Hook Pouch! Perfect in a solid color, color blocks, cross stitched on, or worked in tapestry crochet. So many options for this little bag!

I don’t often carry around a purse, and am not really a make up person, but I do enjoy using my bag for crochet hooks, stitch markers, pencils and other crochet essentials!

My Shay series features easy single crochet stitch patterns. Suitable for beginners and advanced alike! Find wearables and accessories here on Cre8tion Crochet, and home decor projects on EyeLoveKnots.

Materials:
- 115 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Dark Pine colorway
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook – I love my ergonomic hooks from SiennasBowtique on Etsy
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
- Optional for Lining: Fabric, Zipper, Thread and Sewing Machine – I used a pre-made bag that I get at Hobby Lobby where all the canvas items are, and stuck inside my crocheted bag – it measured 9″ wide by 6″ tall – here is a similar bag on Amazon, and I like to use Silamide thread for sewing.
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: WeCrochet Dishie with I9/5.5mm Hook (because it’s a touch thinner)
I recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse.
Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook because it’s not as relaxed as cotton): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
Just over an hour and fifteen minutes.
Measurements:
9″ Wide by 6.25″ Tall
Gauge, in Pattern:
15 SC by 17 Rows = 4.13″ (or 4 1/8″) Wide
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Note:
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, and slip stitch join to the first stitch.
