Bucket hats are the perfect make for a day at the beach. They can protect your head from sunburn. The short floppy brim also provides some neck protection. But the best part is that unlike a wide brim hat they are easily foldable to take on the go.
I chose to make the Dahlia Sun Hat by Ned and Mimi. This particular design has an open, lacy crown section. Therefore you may need to take extra precautions to ensure the head doesn’t burn. However, you could alleviate this problem by adding a cotton fabric liner to the hat. Finishing with a single crochet body for maximum sun protection. This design allows for a good amount of sun protection while adding some more stylish elements.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Bucket Hat?
- Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton; 180 yards in Navy, 20 yards in White
- G6/4mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Stitch Marker (for marking the beginning in continuous rounds)
- Dahlia Sun Hat, Free Crochet Pattern from Ned and Mimi
Material Notes:
I used Lion Brand 24/7 for my hat. However any cotton yarn should work well for this project. Additionally a cotton blend that is more than half cotton would work nicely.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Bucket Hat?
This hat came together in almost no time at all. Overall it took around 3.5 hours to make, not including time for blocking.
Measurements:
8″ x 11″ laid flat with the width being measured right above the brim. I made the adult small size.
Gauge:
18 stitches x 20 rows is approximately 4 inches in continuous sc in the round. Additionally the crown should measure approximately 5.25″.
Pattern Notes:
I worked the hat exactly to pattern. However I added a small stripe to my brim by working the last two rounds in a different color. This allowed for some extra interest in this single color design. This bucket hat was quite simple and quick to make, and I love the final result.
Although not necessary I blocked my finished hat.
