I am honored to be returning to participate in this year’s Crochet Cancer Challenge hosted by Christine from Sweet Potato 3. It’s a beautiful charity event where each day in the month of October, you can download a different free crochet pattern, and each download = 1 pledge for making and donating a hat using that pattern. Many of the beanies/hats are available for the entire month of October so I’ve you’ve missed any, you still have time on many of them to download the PDF – all the details found on the Sweet Potato 3 blog.

Through 10/31/23 at 11:59pm EST, you can grab a free copy of the PDF for the Octavia Beanie on Ravelry using the code found inside Sweet Potato 3’s 2023 Crochet Cancer Challenge post. We both earn our income from the number of pageviews our blogs see, so please do not share the code, but instead share the link to this post or the Crochet Cancer Challenge post so others can find it. Thank you!

Last year, I shared my Lightweight Grace Tinley Beanie in honor of Pancreatic Cancer.

And before that, I shared my Striped Dylan Claire Beanie (over on my sister blog, EyeLoveKnots) in honor of Retinoblastoma and Childhood Cancer.

This year, I’ve chosen the color dark purple for Leiomyosarcoma in honor of my late high school principal, Dr. Mitchell – on the far left in the red cap. This photo is from my Senior Night – the only thing missing is my Tuba. Ha! High school wasn’t a great time for, and there weren’t many things I looked forward to, but taking this photo with Dr. Mitchell and my family was something I looked forward to from the very beginning.

Leiomyosarcoma, or LMS, is a rare type of cancer that grows in the smooth muscles, which are found in the hollow organs of the body, like the stomach, bladder, intestines, etc.

Dr. Mitchell fought so fiercely, but ultimately lost the fight to Leiomyosarcoma. He was so kind, so humble, so smart, so supportive, so encouraging – a true inspiration. If you’ve heard the song “Standing Room Only” by Tim McGraw, it hit me the moment I walked into his service. He will truly be missed by many.

Please visit with Christine at Sweet Potato 3 to get all the details for this Crochet Cancer Challenge, download free printable tags for your beanies, and get the schedule for each free pattern including her beautiful Connie’s Comfort Beanie.

If you haven’t worked a beanie in half double crochets before, they are worked a little different than double crochet beanies, and that is that the crown is worked to 3″ smaller than the head circumference versus 2″.

I love the texture of half double crochet when the fabric is turned at the end of each row/round, though I designed this beanie with turned rounds to help keep the seam straight. There is a lovely edging that helps give it a finished look created by working into the back loop only, but you can also work the final round in regular single crochet stitches, or omit if the length works for you.

Prefer plain half double crochet stitches?

Check out the Haylee Beanie, also available in 7 sizes.

Materials:

  • 70 (80, 100, 115, 140, 160, 200) Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used WeCrochet Swish
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Soft Tape Measure – Gauge is Essential

Material Notes:

I’ve learned from my friend Krissy of Krissy’s Over the Mountain Crochet that as a beanie for cancer patients, the best yarn for a sensitive head is going to be a bamboo blend, like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo. Some can tolerate 100% acrylic or wool, but not all can. With this said, if you’ll be donating your beanie, I recommend looking up the requirements from the organization. Some say not to use wool yarns. Some say not to use Red Heart Super Saver (though I think this is a great yarn that really softens nicely after washing, and wears and washes so well). Some request the beanies to be washed prior to donating. Each has it’s own set of guidelines so you’ll want to check with the organization first.

As a cold weather beanie, animal fibers are better for keeping warm against the wind, and while alpaca works great, my go-to is always a 100% superwash merino wool, like WeCrochet Swish Yarn, or a wool and acrylic blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease and Berroco Vintage. All of these that I’ve mentioned hold up well to wear and tear and machine washing and drying.

If you happen to be a tight crocheter, you may want to work the final round of single crochet only in an I9/5.5mm crochet hook to help keep a looser round so there is no restriction in the final beanie.

I love my ergonomic clay hooks from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! They both have so many fun designs – I have several from each shop because they’re so darn cute and nice to hold onto! We also have lots of beautiful, handcrafted crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop as well!

Time Spent:

I was able to work up the teen/adult small size in two hours.

Measurements:

The Newborn Size has a crown of 3 5/8″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 11 3/8″ to fit a head size of 13″ – 14″, and is 5″ in length.

The 3-6 Month Size has a crown of 4 3/8″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 13 3/4″ to fit a head size of 14″ – 16″, and is 5 3/8″ in length.

The 6-12 Month Size has a crown of 5″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 15 3/4″ to fit a head size of 17″ – 19″, and is 5 3/4″ in length.

The Toddler Size has a crown of 5 1/4″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 16 1/2″ to fit a head size of 18″ – 20″, and is 6 5/8″ in length.

The Child Size Size has a crown of 6″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 18 7/8″ to fit a head size of 20″ – 22″, and is 7″ in length.

The Teen/Adult Small Size has a crown of 6″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 18 7/8″ to fit a head size of 20″ – 22″, and is 8 1/2″ in length.

The Adult Large Size has a crown of 6 3/8″ in diameter, a circumference of nearly 20 1/16″ to fit a head size of 22″ – 23″, and is 8 1/2″ or 9 1/2″ in length.

*If you are concerned with the size (or want to make a different size), take your tape measure out and measure around your head just above your eyebrows. The distance around is the circumference. You will need to use this equation to figure out what size diameter you will need: Your Circumference – 3” / 3.14 (pi) = crown diameter. 2” is the amount of stretch for acrylic, wool, and similar.

Gauge:

Measured in Pattern.

Gauge it very important for beanies. If you do not meet gauge, and continue making your beanie, the finished size will either be too small or too big so make sure to stop and check it. If you’re measuring smaller than the given measurements, go up a crochet hook size, and if you’re measuring larger, go down a crochet hook size. Rework the sample, take gauge again, and see where you are.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial | Video Tutorial)
  • FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet
  • BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Post stitches are worked around the post of the previous rounds stitch rather than into the top of the stitch. The post is found directly underneath the top of the stitch.

It’s very easy to add stitches in post stitch rounds because sometimes it’s hard to determine where to work the next stitch after the post stitch since the top of the post stitch you just finished will appear unworked. In the first round of the ribbed pattern, it’s easiest to reference the posts of the double crochets from the previous row. See where your last post stitch was worked, then move to the post of the stitch to the left, follow it up and you’ll find the top of the stitch directly above it.

To Front Post Double Crochet (worked from the front of the fabric): Yarn over, then swoop your hook downward and towards the front so your hook stays on the front side of the fabric. From the front to the back, insert your hook into the space in between the stitches so that your hook comes out just to the right of the desired stitch. Wrap the crochet hook around the back of the desired stitch. From the back to the front, insert your hook into the space in between the stitches so that your hook comes out just to the left of the desired stitch. At this point, the desired stitch will appear raised on the front of the fabric. Yarn over and pull directly through (3 loops on your hook). (Yarn over and pull through 2 loops) 2x.

To Back Post Double Crochet (worked from the back of the fabric): Yarn over, then swoop your hook downward and backward so your hook goes to the back of the fabric. From the back to the front, insert your hook into the space in between the stitches so that your hook comes out just to the right of the desired stitch. Wrap the crochet hook around the front of the desired stitch. From the front to the back, insert your hook into the space in between the stitches so that your hook comes out just to the left of the desired stitch. At this point, the desired stitch will appear raised on the back of the fabric. Yarn over and pull directly through (3 loops on your hook). (Yarn over and pull through 2 loops) 2x.

Pattern Notes:

I work my crown and body differently than most to help keep my seam straight, and that is that the first stitch from the first set of increases is done in the first stitch of the round, which will appear just to left of the beginning chain, then the round will be worked as normal, and the final stitch of the round will be the second stitch of the first set of increases, and it will be worked into the same stitch as the first, and appear just to the right of the beginning chain. The photo above shows where the first and last stitch are worked, and I have a photo tutorial of this technique in my How to Keep a Straight Seam post. You can work in your preferred increase method as long as we end up with the same stitches at the end of the round.

Slip stitch join to the first stitch of each round.

Watch for turning directions. In the beginning, each size is worked with Round 1 and 2 on the right side without turning. The remaining rounds are worked in turned rounds until the final round of single crochet. This round of single crochet is optional, but I really like the polished look, and how the edge lays flatter naturally. I’ve worked mine into the back loop only, but you could also do regular single crochet, or end of a round of the half double crochet and post stitch. To get the final round on the right side of the beanie, some sizes instruct to turn, while others do not.

If you happen to be a tight crocheter, you may want to work the final single crochet round only in an I9/5.5mm crochet hook to help keep a looser round so there is no restriction in the final beanie.
