Material Notes:

Anastasia collaborated with Expression Fiber Arts for her ruana. She chose the Alpaca Silk DK, which is described as warm and soft, with a gorgeous drape. It is 50% baby alpaca and 50% mulberry silk. I personally haven’t tried this yarn, but it sounds wonderful! I went with Berroco Modern Cotton DK in the colors Sandy Point, Coffee Milk, and Thames. These are warm neutral colors that I figured would go with a lot of different outfits. Modern Cotton DK is one of my favorite DKs to work with. The drape is perfect, it is soft, and very lightweight for warmer climates. I made the size M/L/XL/2XL and used approximately 1,500 yards. You can definitely make this one solid color, but Anastasia does provide the yardage breakdown for if you choose to make it striped.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Fairy Wing Ruana?

This took about 17-18 hours. Each panel took about 8 hours, and then there is some sewing and the border.

Gauge:

The gauge is 11.5 stitches by 11 rows = 4″. The original pattern calls for a J10/6mm hook, but I ended up going down to an I9/5.5mm hook instead. My swatch with the J hook was too large, and the swatch with the I hook matched in width, but not length. I stuck with it because I figured that width is more important than length in this case and it turned out just fine.

Pattern Notes:

The Fairy Wing Ruana is made by making 2 panels, sewing them down the back and sides, and adding a border. The solid portion of the fabric is made with half double crochets, yarn under half double crochets, and single crochets. If you are not familiar with a yarn under half double crochet (yuhdc) you can find a YouTube tutorial for it here by Anastasia. The lacey part of the stripe is where the “fairy wing” happens. This part can be a little tricky for a beginner, but she provides step by step photo instructions and a YouTube video for this as well. It is a combination of cluster stitches. I love how this lace breaks up the solid parts of the fabric and adds such a beautiful detail.

The Fairy Wing Ruana is an essential piece for every girl’s wardrobe. You can style it so many different ways and make it in so many colors combos! Comment below to tell me how you are going to wear your Fairy Wing Ruana!
