It’s me, Emily with Crochet Aweigh.
This incredible, lacy top is designed by Anastasia of Journey Chanel Designs. Pineapple stitches are some of my favorite stitches to crochet so I was very excited when she chose me to be a pattern tester! Anastasia puts a twist on this design by also incorporating puff stitches as well! This pattern is fun to follow, and is almost addicting to watch the pineapples flow from one to the other. The pattern is graded for sizes XXS – 7XL so everyone can make themselves a Romance Top!

Material Notes:
Anastasia chose Botanica from Lion Brand Yarn, which is a 100% Lyocell. Lyocell is a vegan silk made with eucalyptus leaves! It does really look like a silk! Lion Brand calls this yarn a size 4 worsted weight, but Anastasia says it is much thinner like a DK. There are also kits available with Lion Brand for this pattern! Several of the other testers chose to use this yarn and they really like it.
I wanted to use a yarn that I offer at Crochet Aweigh in Tavares, FL so that I could have another sample project for the shop. I chose Queensland Collection Myrtle, which is also a 100% Lyocell yarn, but it is definitely a true worsted weight. My top came out a bit heavier than expected due to the slightly thicker yarn. Now even though it seems heavy on the hanger, it doesn’t feel heavy while I’m wearing it. It isn’t hot either. It is a very breathable fabric and I like it a lot. However I do think it would make a better crocheted bag than a garment.
I made the Large size and I used approximately 1600 yards of Myrtle in the color Jet.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Romance Top?
This worked up way faster than I expected. It only took about 7 hours for my size Large.

Gauge:
The gauge is 14 stitches by 7 rows = 4″. The original pattern calls for a G+/4.5 mm hook, but I ended up going down to a G6/4.00 mm hook instead due to the thicker yarn.

All About Making the Romance Top:
The Romance Top begins by making 2 identical panels, one for the front and the back. Once those are completed the shoulder and sides get seamed together. Sleeves get added last and are worked in the round without any more seaming!
The pattern is supposed to have 1″-13″ of positive ease, and is designed to be oversized and flowy. Mine came out a little snug, especially in the armholes. If I ever make this top again I’m going to use the XL stitch count for the armholes instead of the large size stitch count.

Due to the offset pineapple stitches, the pattern does have a fairly long pattern repeat, but that is what keeps things interesting and helps it go by fast! Overall this was a very well-written pattern, and it was easy to follow. Definitely do block it at the end to help open up all those lacy stitches!

The Romance Top is a new favorite of mine to wear in the summer! Don’t let the lace intimidate you, you can do it and you’ll be so glad you did! Comment below to let me know if you are going to try out this beautiful top for yourself!
