It’s me, Emily with Crochet Aweigh.

Lucille is such a pretty name, isn’t it? The Lucille Fingering Weight Top is designed by Alexandra of EyeLoveKnots, Cre8tion Crochet, On Rockwood Lane, and Yarn Crafts & Coffee. She sure is a busy bee!

I made this top as a sample project for the 2026 Orange Blossom Yarn Crawl. A yarn crawl is an organized multi-day event where yarn enthusiasts travel around to the participating shops, similar to a pub crawl. It is supposed to foster community, support the local shops, and usually includes prizes and “passports”. The Orange Blossom Yarn Crawl occurs late Winter-Early Spring each year in the Central to East Central Florida area. Every shop does daily drawings, and has their own shop prize basket. This year there were also 2 grand prize baskets for people who completed their passports and visited all 8 participating shops!

At my shop, Crochet Aweigh, I ordered an exclusive yarn for the event. I have been wanting an exclusive yarn inspired one of our local tourist attractions, the Dora Canal. The Dora Canal connects two of our big lakes nearby and offers a variety of activities like lunch cruises and kayak tours. Below you can see some of the inspiration photos that I sent to Laura of Dizzy Blonde Studios. Whenever I get an idea for a custom color way in my head I think about the different Florida dyers I carry at the shop and decide which one feels like the best fit for the color in my head. Laura has a way with greens and browns so she seemed like the perfect dyer for the Dora Canal Yarn!

If you’d like to purchase some of this yarn you can do so here or send an email to [email protected] to request some if it’s out of stock.

Last year I designed a coordinating pattern to go with our yarn crawl colorway, but this year was a bit crazy so I asked Alexandra if I could feature the Lucille Top as the sample project, and she said yes! She also updated the pattern to include additional strap options and different length options.

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Lucille Top?

  • 641-1843 yards of any Fingering #1 weight yarn
  • F5/3.75mm Crochet Hook or size needed to obtain gauge – We love Clover Amour Ergonomic hooks!
  • Soft tape measure as gauge is important
  • Scissors and yarn needle for weaving ends
  • Optional Stitch Markers – I love these cute kitty ones!
  • The Lucille Fingering Weight Yarn Top, Free Crochet Pattern from EyeLoveKnots on her blog, or Paid on Ravelry

Material Notes:

You already know that I chose some very unique hand dyed yarn in a fingering #1 weight. This yarn is the “Platinum Blonde Superwash” base from Dizzy Blonde Studios. It is 75% superwash Merino and 25% Nylon, which means it would also be fantastic for socks and shawls. Alexandra recommends Berroco Vintage Sock, or another wool blend as alternatives. She says it would be best to avoid 100% cotton or 100% linen as they don’t have the same kind of stretch, or hold their shape the same.

I made the XL size and used about 725 yards of the Dora Canal yarn. I went with the original boat neck option, and went for a cropped look.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Lucille Top?

Because I did the cropped version it went pretty quick! This took about 10 hours total for my XL size.

Gauge:

The gauge is 21 double crochets by 9 rows = 4″. The pattern calls for an F5/3.75mm hook, and I was able to meet gauge in width only with a custom F hook from Bronze Shepherd Studio! Since I only met the width gauge I knew that my measurements around would be correct, but I would have to add extra rows to make up for where I was short. That’s okay though! I usually stick with the hook if I met the width and do not make another swatch.

Measurements:

The Lucille Top Pattern is written for sizes XS-5X. The top is designed based off of bust measurements with 0″ of ease. If you prefer a tighter or looser fit, you can adjust by choosing a smaller or larger size. The finished measurements around are as follows:

  • XS = 28″
  • S = 32″
  • M = 36″
  • L = 40″
  • XL = 44″
  • 2X = 48″
  • 3X = 52″
  • 4X = 56″
  • 5X = 60″

All About Making the Lucille Top:

My favorite thing about the Lucille Top is that even a newbie can make the boat neck version! It was such a satisfying and simple process to make 2 rectangles and seam them on the shoulders and up the sides. The top is a simple 2 row repeat. One row is regular double crochets, and the other row is a cluster stitch. She gives very clear directions on how to make this cluster stitch. Other people may know it as a dc4tog, a double crochet 4 together stitch.

You simply make 2 rectangles, place the wrong sides together, seam the indicated number across the shoulders, and then measure the indicated measurement down the sides, place a marker, and do the side seams up to the marker. Finally the top is finished off with some single crochet ribbing around the bottom.

Personally there is only one thing I would change if I make another one of these tops. I would bring in the front shoulder seams just a little, maybe an inch on either side. The head hole felt a little wide on me and the straps of my tank top were visible. I’d probably just stitch over a little bit more, or maybe I will try the updated version of the pattern that includes regular front panels for more of a tank look!

Either way, this Lucille Top came out so cute and it was a big hit during the yarn crawl! I sold all 40 skeins of the Dora Canal yarn that I ordered for the event so that was a big win! Comment below to tell me which version of this top you are making for yourself!
