Through the Window Clutch – Free Crochet Pattern | Mosaic Crochet Clutch Pattern

This is a free crochet pattern and video tutorial showing how to crochet the Through the Window Clutch – a fun clutch crochet pattern that uses the mosaic crochet technique. Don’t let it scare you! It’s comprised of simple single crochet stitches, chains and easy double crochets.

Friends, this beautiful mosaic clutch pattern has been sitting in my draft box for 3 years! I can’t believe it, but I am so happy to share it with you. This mosaic stitch pattern is one of my favorites!

I’ve labeled the series “Through the Window” because it reminds me of a window pane. While I’ve worked this bag up in solid colors, it looks really great with the second color being a variegated yarn. Find wearables and accessories here on Cre8tion Crochet, and home decor projects on EyeLoveKnots.

The idea of mosaic crochet may intimidate you, but please don’t let it. This stitch pattern is comprised of single crochets and chains with some double crochets to create the overlap. I think a confident beginner could do this. Make sure to check the pattern notes for a photo that breaks the pattern down just a bit, and should ease your fear.

I am not a purse type of gal, and don’t intend on carrying this around in that manner, but rather as a larger clutch that will hold my notebook, and pouch of hooks, pencil and notions.

What Do I Need to Crochet a Clutch?

• 230 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Mod Blue and Ecru colorways
• H8/5mm Crochet Hook – I love my ergonomic hooks from SiennasBowtique on Etsy
• Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
• Optional, Jewelry Pliers
• Optional, Fabric for Lining and Zipper (I used a pre-made bag that I stuck inside and then sewed in place – it measured 10.88″ wide by 9.25″ tall)
• Sewing Machine and Matching Thread (for lining)

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: WeCrochet Dishie with I9/5.5mm Hook (because it’s a touch thinner)

I recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse.

Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook because it’s not as relaxed as cotton): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value

Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Clutch?

Just under 3 hours.

Measurements:

10.63″ Wide by 9.75″ Tall

Gauge:

16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4″

Abbreviations (US Terms):

• HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
• DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
• SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

In the pattern, I will instruct to example, in Round 5 “DC into R3”. In the photo above, you can see how there is a skipped stitch in white, and two rows of chains above it. You will push those chains to the back, and work the double crochet just into that skipped stitch in white.

Mosaic Stitch multiple is 4, but if you need to adjust the size of the bag, keep in mind that by adding or subtracting by 1 chain to the foundation, it will add or subtract 2 stitches from the total number for the round.

Join to the first stitch of the round.

To change yarn colors, after joining, turn to the new working side. Pull the new color through, then pull the original color tight (it will disappear). Work the round as written, but before joining, move the previous color to the inside so it won’t be visible from the right side of the bag.

Through the Window Clutch Written Pattern:

In Cream, chain 38. 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, and the next 35, 3 HDC into the last chain, HDC into the next 35 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC into the 1st stitch. Join. (76 HDC)

R2: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st HDC, and into each HDC around. Join with Blue. (76 SC)

R3: In Blue, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st SC, chain 3, skip the next 2 SC, (SC into each of the next 2 SC, chain 3, skip the next 2 SC) 18x, SC into the next stitch. Join.

R4: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, chain 3, (SC into each of the next 2 SC, chain 3) 18x, SC into the next SC. Join with Cream.

R5: In Cream, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st SC, DC into each of the 2 open stitches from R3, (SC into each of the next 2 SC, DC into each of the next 2 stitches of R3) 19x, SC into the next SC. Join.

R6: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each around. Join with Blue.

R7 – 26: Repeat Rows 3 – 6.

R27 – 30: In Blue, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Join with Cream at the end of Round 30.

R31 – 32: In Cream, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Join with Blue.

R33 – 40: Repeat Rows 3 – 6.

R41: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st stitch, and each around. Join.

Fasten off, and weave in ends. Add a lining if desired.
