Bitty Boho Bag – Crochet Pattern Review and Lining Tutorial

Last Holiday Season my family and I were doing our usual shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. I absolutely love being a part of such a great ministry, reaching out to children all over the world. This year we had decided to pack a shoe box for a little girl, and I just knew that I wanted to add something extra special and handmade to her box. After debating on whether or not to add a hat, one of my favorite things to make, I decided on a purse since we had no idea what part of the world the box would end up at and I figured every little girl could use a fun purse to carry all her most important and favorite things.

Then later while I was brainstorming for some fun items to add to my spring/summer market inventory I thought this Bitty Boho Bag would be perfect. Especially because there is also an adult version for making Mommy and Me sets. The bobbles and fringe on this bag give off the perfect boho chic vibe that every little girl needs. And of course, I just can’t seem to leave a bag unlined, so I had to add a fun floral lining.

This bag was such a quick and fun make that I had several whipped up in no time and ready for my next upcoming market. I can’t wait to show them off!

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Boho Bag:

• 90 Yards (or 1.75 oz) of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Hobby Lobby’s I love This Cotton
• H8/5mm Crochet Hook
• Darning needle and scissors for weaving in ends.
• Bitty Boho Bag Crochet Pattern – Available in both FREE and PAID options.
• OPTIONAL Materials for lining: Small piece of fabric (2 pieces at least 5″ x 6″ or one that will fold to that size), matching thread and needle for sewing, ink pen, and scissors for cutting fabric.

Material Notes:

The pattern was written using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn which is a worsted weight acrylic yarn but I opted to go with cotton so it would be less likely to pill and would hold its shape better after extended use. Their acrylic yarn does come with a lot more color options compared to the cotton so that could always be a deciding factor for which one you choose. I did attempt to make one using Sugar and Cream Cotton because I loved the Hot Pink color and it would have gone great with my brand colors, but it ended up being too hard to work with for this bag. It is a much rougher yarn than the I Love This Cotton. I was able to get 2 Bitty Boho Bags out of one skein of the I Love This Cotton.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet the Bitty Boho Bag:

I was able to crochet the bag in about an hour and then line it in an additional half hour.

Measurements:

Finished bag measures about 4.5″ long by 4.5″ wide with a 25″ long strap. Photo was taken on a small 3-year-old for size reference.

Gauge:

5 sc and 5 rows of sc = 1″

Pattern Notes:

Overall, this pattern was a quick and fun make without any issues. The part I found to be the most challenging was the strap which is made using a foundation single crochet. I found that for it to look it’s best you have to be really careful about keeping your stitches and tension the same the entire time. I was easier to keep the stitches even if I did not stop part way through the strap but that can be a bit tricky with kids always wanting my attention.

I did decide to use a small piece of cardboard for wrapping the yarn around to make cutting and measuring the fringe a little bit easier. I cut the piece of cardboard to the length I wanted my fringe (I just went with the 7″ that the pattern suggested), wrapped the yarn around once for each section of fringe I wanted (I decided on 15 for my bag) and then cut the yarn at both ends of the cardboard, giving me 2 strands for each wrap around the cardboard for a total of 30 strands.

A way to keep track of what row you are on might also be helpful for the first time you make this bag but if you are like me and want to make several, after a couple bags I had to pattern repeats down and was able to make them with minimal pattern referencing. I used a clicker row counter for keeping track of the rows but a piece of paper with tally marks would also work well.

The first bag that I made for the Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box, I used the free version but when I decided to make them for my markets, I decided to go ahead and buy the paid pattern and it was definitely worth it to have it all written out without all the ads in the way.

Fabric Lining Tutorial

For lining your Bitty Boho Bag, you will need a small amount of fabric, about 5″ x 6″ when folded in half (or 2 pieces that size), some matching thread and needle for sewing, scissors for cutting, and an ink pen for tracing. A fat quarter would be perfect if you are only doing one or wanted several different prints. I found this fun floral fabric at Hobby Lobby and thought it would be prefect for matching all the bags I made so I went ahead and got several yards.

Because I knew I was going to be making lots of these bags, I went ahead and made myself a pattern by tracing the bag on a piece of paper and then cutting out, but you can skip this step if you would like and just trace the bag directly onto your fabric. Make sure to fold the strap and fringe on top of the bag before tracing so they do not get in the way. You will need two pieces of fabric, so I like to have my fabric double layered when tracing and cutting to save a step.

TIP: if your fabric has an obvious directional pattern, be sure that the pattern is going the correct direction before tracing.

After tracing your bag/pattern onto your fabric, cut along the lines that you just made. Then taking the fabric and putting right sides together, sew around the outside in a U shape. I chose to do this step with my sewing machine, but it can easily be done by hand as well.

After sewing the sides, fold the top of the bag down about 1″ towards the outside. You can iron on the fold, but again this is an optional step.

Next, insert your lining into your bag and adjust the fold if needed so that it is not above the top edge of your bag and not too low. Also be sure to make sure that your side seams line up with the sides of the bag. I lined mine up so that it was right at the top of the second row of single crochets.

To attach the lining to the bag, I did a simple whip stitch by picking up a small section of yarn on the inside of the bag and then going through the top edge of the lining, repeating the process until the entire top edge of the lining is attached to the bag.

To finish off the lining, I tied the two ends of thread together and then using the needle, I hid the thread tails between the lining and the crocheted bag by running the needle between the layers.

Congratulations!! You now have a chic and stylish Bitty Boho Bag that is sure to make any little girl smile.
