Carrie from Mountain Momma Crochet here! I appreciate you checking out the assessment of the Easy Granny Crochet Christmas Baubles.
As much yarn as we have all over the house, it makes sense we’d also put some on the Christmas tree.
I’ve been at this for a while but haven’t given much thought to making my own ornaments. The closest I’ve made it to putting yarn on my tree was the mini stockings from last year. I’m here to tell you, I didn’t know what I was missing.
Given the timing for this blog post, I wanted to share something ‘holiday-centric’ you could use to make a little something for yourself, your family, or a market. As with all crochet items, your imagination is your very best friend when it comes to picking colors and yarn. While I could’ve raided my stash for the yarn for this project, I made a special trip to Jo’s (JOANN) to see what she had to offer. She did not let me down. While I’ve seen most people use acrylic yarn for Christmas ornaments, I decided to use cotton yarn.
Then it happened. I was halfway down the second yarn aisle and I heard the soft playing of trumpets and birds chirping. Anyone reading this post ever used Lion Brand 24/7 cotton before? Apparently, I am the only one who hasn’t given it a try. After this make, I am a believer. Blame it on the organization of the colors in this line in the bins, but I fell in love with the richness in the combination of ‘Dragonfly’ and ‘Jade’ when paired with ‘Red’. I happily picked up these colors, along with ‘Grass’ and ‘White’. In the spirit of transparency, I have plenty of ILT Cotton (I Love This Cotton) on hand but I fell in love with the feel of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton.
What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet an Easy Granny Crochet Christmas Bauble?
- Multiple shades of cotton yarn (or acrylic based on preference); I used Lion Brand 24/7 cotton in Red, White, Dragonfly, Jade, and Grass; less than half an ounce of each color for one bauble
- Size E4/3.5mm crochet hook
- Needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- 3.25″ clear, plastic bauble
- Easy Granny Crochet Christmas Bauble pattern – Free Pattern from the website, or Paid PDF via Etsy
Material Notes:
I selected the 3.5 mm hook based on the yarn I was using. The pattern instructs to use C/2.5 mm for fingering weight, D/3mm for sport weight, and E/3.5mm for DK. Lion Brand 24/7 yarn is a size ‘4’ weight yarn which calls for a size G6/4mm hook. If you’ve made amigurumi, sizing your hook down from what the yarn label instructs should not be a new concept.
Additionally, I chose to use a clear, plastic bauble versus stuffing. Since there were gaps in the granny stitches, the pattern instructs to use a plastic bauble as it would be sturdier and does not show the polyfill through the holes. If you also choose to use a plastic bauble, just about any craft store should have these available this time of year. I picked up a box of four from Hobby Lobby last year, so credit me for using something from my stash (insert sarcastic wink here). Or recycle existing baubles from your Christmas decorations.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet an Easy Christmas Crochet Bauble?
The bauble is made by joining two circles together. The number of ends to weave depends on your color changes. One time-saving tip, work up both circles at the same time, weaving in the ends as you go. I opted for this because of the ‘join method’ I used to keep the color change as seamless as possible. I didn’t use a slip stitch but rather used this method to join for neatness, minus the slip stitch. I didn’t time myself, but I made all four ornaments over two days, working on them sporadically or while binge-watching Amazon Prime or listening to Harry Potter on Audible.
Gauge/Measurement:
There is no gauge or measurement mentioned in the pattern. It states you can continue the granny stitch as needed until both halves stretch over the bauble. I measured mine a few times while making the first one. Once I had it down, it was easy and I began to make the two halves on repeat.
Pattern Notes:
If you purchase the ad-free PDF from Etsy, it also includes two additional patterns. The additional baubles are for the same size make, if you choose to mix it up a bit. Using the four-pack I was able to work up the same colors in a different order for a unique look every time.
On subsequent bobbles, I changed up the starting chain for each row to chain 2 instead of chain 3. It helped my joins look neat in every section (remember to use the method from the video referenced above). When it came time to connect the circles around the bauble, the pattern didn’t list any specific method to use. I would suggest using your preference and what you are used to. I used the mattress stitch to bring my beautiful crochet baubles to life.
What color combinations would you choose? I went shopping at Jo’s again today to grab some colors that match my existing tree decorations as well as the current popular color combination of black, grey, and white. The yarns pictured above are Lion Brand 24/7 in Ecru, Amber, Cafe Au Lait, and Bay Leaf. One additional color of Rose Garden by Premium Yarn Knit and Crochet Essential, also available at JOANN.
If you’ve never tried to crochet an ornament, I hope this post gives you the encouragement to give it a try. As an additional suggestion, if you like to make ornaments, consider adding a wooden tag with the year to pass down to your kids or grandkids.
