There are a lot of summer activities that require you to carry extra accessories. Whether it’s a day at the beach or the pool, camping or a simple picnic, a day at the library or just sightseeing on vacation. You’re probably going to need a bag. So many options are available for crochet bags, check out my 10 tried and true bags. Bags come in many shapes and sizes so you can always find the perfect one to fit your needs.
Today I am sharing the Sassy Ocean Beach Bag. Inspired by the ocean in the movie Moana, one of my favorite Disney movies. I just had to make this bag! A small section of color work to make the waves insures a little variety in stitches. However it’s not so much that it would be daunting for those who are newer to color work. Working with double strands provides a very sturdy bag. Although designed for a day at the beach, this bag would be ideal for any activity you have planned.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Bag?
- Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton Yarn (740 yards in White and 175 yards in Jade)
- I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Tape Measure (optional)
- Safety Pin Style Stitch Markers or Safety Pins
- Sassy Ocean Beach Bag, Paid Crochet Pattern from Clair de Lune Fiber Art Eye on Ravelry
Material Notes:
This bag is worked with two strands of strong cotton yarn. Although I used a different brand than the designer I do suggest sticking with a cotton yarn. Cotton is going to provide the best strength and give you the sturdiest bag.
I chose Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton which is a mercerized cotton. Mercerizing strengthens cotton further and helps it hold dye better. Additionally it slows water absorption making it a great choice for a beach bag. I have made numerous bags with this yarn and I love it’s strength and durability.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet A Bag?
This bag took around 12 hours to complete.
Measurements:
The rectangle that makes the bottom of the bag measures 4″ x 14.5 “. Bag body measures 10.5″ x 17.5″ laid flat. Straps measure 25″ x 1.5”.
Gauge:
Gauge 14 stitches x 14 rows in single crochet is equal to 4″. I didn’t match the designer’s gauge for this pattern.
Pattern Notes:
I made just a couple of small changes to my bag from the written pattern. First, I added an additional round of single crochet in the main color. Next I did the final round as slip stitch with my contrast color. I feel that doing this adds extra strength to the top of the bag. Additionally I feel like it decreased the stretching over time.
Also I slightly adjusted the handle construction. Leaving long tails at the start and end of the handles allows the use of the tails for sewing. This is beneficial because it gives the handles a better anchor. It also eliminates having to cut extra strands of yarn to sew the handles to the bag.
I recommend pinning the straps before sewing. Safety pin style stitch markers or safety pins work best for this. If you want to make sure that your straps are even use a tape measure. Measure the same distance from each side for accurate placement.
Overall this was an easy bag to make. Plus it is nicely sized to carry a lot of stuff. I feel like it is the perfect summer bag no matter what activities you have planned.
