Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
It seems like summer had just started and so soon it’s over! Back to School season is already upon us. With two daughters, hair accessories are always a necessity. I am always looking for ways to help tame those manes. I came across the Brinley Hair Scarf in my pattern library and decided to give it a go.
It is a basic hair tie but uses a less common stitch. If you haven’t had the opportunity to try extended half double crochet now’s your chance. With a single row repeat (with the exception of a few increase/decrease rows) this hair scarf comes together quickly. Three different sizes are included in the pattern. Plus it has all the information to make adjustments so options are endless. Additionally, it makes a cute skinny scarf. The thin size resembles an ascot, but it could be made longer for a different look. I chose the thin version to make this time. However I see the possibility of a few more in my future.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Hair Scarf:
- 75 yards of Sport Weight #2 Yarn – I used Lion Brand Cotton Bamboo Linen in Denim
- G6/4mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape (if size is important)
- Brinley Hair Scarf, Paid Crochet Pattern from Through the Loop Yarn Craft on Ravelry
Material Notes:
I used Lion Brand Cotton Bamboo Linen for my hair scarf. Although it is labeled as a sport weight (2) it worked up very similar to the Lion Brand Nuboo yarn that the designer used, which sadly has been discontinued. Simple and straightforward adjustments are used to change the sizing. Therefore if my measurements were off any adjustments could be made easily. I used the same yarn for my Sunset Boulevard Top a few months ago. Because of the simplicity of both stitch patterns I can potentially wear them together as a coordinating set if I feel like it!
I love my ergonomic clay hooks from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! They both have so many fun designs – I have several from each shop because they’re so darn cute and nice to hold onto! We also have lots of beautiful, handcrafted crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop as well!
Ashley does have the written instructions for the Thin size available for free on her blog. The wide and pontail sizes are available in the paid PDF.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Hair Scarf:
This project is a very quick make. Mine came together in less than 30 minutes. Again I made the thin version, the wide will take slightly longer. However the pony tail version would probably only take about 10-15 minutes!
Measurements:
My finished thin size hair scarf measures approximately 2 inches wide and 34 inches in length.
Gauge:
8 stitches and 5 rows is equal to 2″ in extended half double crochet.
Pattern Notes:
You’re tying the hair tie each time you put it in your hair. With use yarn has a tendency to stretch. So I made one small change in the pattern. I just slip stitched all around the sides. This small step helps slow the stretch. Additionally, it gives it a smoother and more finished edge.
I really liked how quickly this hair scarf came together. We chose to tie it underneath the hair but you can also tie it at the top for a bow look.
