Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
I seem to make quite a few beanies every year for all the members of my family. Last year it seemed that everywhere I looked the beanies were being made with thick chunky yarn, and although I loved the way they looked, I just couldn’t see making one when it doesn’t get that cold here. However, I absolutely fell in love with this design and bought it thinking I might adapt it for a thinner yarn, but the last couple weeks here have been kinda cold relatively, so there might actually be a week or two this year that I can wear this beanie on my morning walks.
Because you are using a super bulky yarn this crocheted beanie comes together in just a couple of hours. It is an intermediate pattern because of the back loop slip stitching and the short row shaping. The pattern is written for a single brim or double brim (I chose double). Even though it is only written for a single size it is very easy to adapt.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet A Beanie:
- Super Bulky #6 Yarn – I used 100 yards of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick in the Wheat colorway
- N15/10mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Northbound Beanie, Paid Crochet Pattern from Alyse Crochet on Ravelry
Material Notes:
I don’t use thicker yarns very often but Wool Ease Thick and Quick is becoming my go to. This yarn is very easy to work with and because it is mostly acrylic it isn’t itchy plus it’s machine washable and comes in a very wide array of colors. If you have wool allergies Yarn Bee Dream Supreme, Premier Basix Super Bulky or Lion Brand Hometown should be suitable matches. All of these choices are 100% acrylic.
Although I didn’t add one to my beanie, a pom pom would be absolutely amazing on this beanie. Again tags are also very popular on beanies and would be a nice addition. I thought about adding one to mine but decided I preferred the plain look.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet A Beanie?
It took me about two hours to crochet this beanie. I took a little bit longer measuring and deciding what adjustments I needed to make to get it the right size.
Measurements:
My finished beanie was 10.5 inches in length and 18 inches circumference. This measurement was taken after seaming and laid flat.
Gauge:
This pattern didn’t include typical gauge swatch information. Although I measured my beanie as suggested in the pattern my finished beanie was too small. I measured my finished beanie to get a gauge of 10 stitches and 10 rows in pattern measures approximately 4 inches.
Pattern Notes:
I ended up adding a few more repeats to my beanie to get the right size. The gauge information was a little vague. Although I met the gauge given my beanie was still a little small when I finished according to pattern. I tend to crochet on the tighter side. Additionally I have made another design that had mostly slip stitching and it came out small as well. So I feel like it is a me problem and not a problem with the design.
Overall I love the way this beanie turned out. Although it is bulky it isn’t stiff. Plus it fits just right.
