Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
It’s that time of year again when the weather is heating up. Hydration is so important when it gets hot out. Whether you’re going on a hike or spending the day at the pool, having water is a must. The Traveler’s Water Bottle Bag is the perfect solution. Having a bottle bag with a shoulder strap keeps your hands free for other things. Whether it’s taking that absolutely perfect shot or playing with the kids. Additionally this bag has a seamless strap. This means that it is crocheted directly on the bag without having to attach later. This adds extra security to the strap so you don’t have to worry about it falling off with the weight of the water.
Furthermore, I have made a couple other water bottle bags that you can see in my 10 Tried and True Bags post. These water bottle bags have been in use for a few years now and are still holding strong.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Water Bottle Bag?
- 80 yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Purple
- G6/4 mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers (2)

Material Notes:
I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for my water bottle bag. This is one of my favorite yarns to use for bags. Firstly, it is a cotton yarn, perfect for bags because it stretches less than other fibers. Secondly it is mercerized. Mercerized cotton is stronger, less likely to tear and mildew resistant. Additionally it comes is a wide array of vibrant colors.
In addition to the yarn, you will also need a tapestry needle, scissors, and stitch markers. Since cotton yarn can sometimes be a little tougher to sew in ends, I recommend using a steel tapestry needle.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Water Bottle Bag?
It took me around an hour and a half to complete this bag.
What Size is a Finished Water Bottle Bag?
My bag measures 8.5 inches tall not including the strap and 4 inches in width laid flat. I made a small adjustment to my bag, see pattern notes below for details.
Gauge:
Using worsted weight cotton yarn and a G6/4 mm crochet hook, the circle measures 2.25″ in diameter after round 5.
Making the Traveler’s Water Bottle Bag:
I made a slight adjustment to my bag adding two rounds of half double crochet after round 19. I felt like my bag needed just a little additional height to fit my bottle the way I wanted. Overall I am happy with my new Traveler’s Water Bottle Bag. I am sure that it will give me several years of durable use.
