It’s me, Emily with Crochet Aweigh.
Hey Friends! I finally made something for myself just because, and with no ulterior motives! I found yarn I loved, found a fun pattern and made it. If you know me, you know that its rather rare for me to do a “just because” project. Usually my projects consist of pattern tests, new designs, or sample projects for my shop or for a show. This time I was craving something relaxing and fun. I came across the Movie Night Cocoon Cardi by Two of Wands and thought it was perfect! I did make a couple of tweaks of course! I love how completely flexible this design is. This cocoon is easily adjustable so there is no information for different sizes. I’ll talk a little more about that below.

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Movie Night Cocoon Cardi?
- Approximately 1,160 yards of a DK or #3 yarn. I used Mimi Fingering Tweed Yarn in the color Monkshood (see notes below)
- J10/6 mm Crochet Hook depending on yarn selection – We love Clover Amour Ergonomic hooks!
- Soft tape measure as taking measurements is important
- Scissors and yarn needle for weaving ends
- Stitch Markers – I love these cute kitty ones!

Material Notes:
Two of Wands chose Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for her cocoon, which would make for an amazing project. However sometimes inspiration strikes differently, which is how it happened for me. I found some amazing hand dyed yarn that I HAD to have. I heard that the Yarn Adventure Truck was going to be at a yarn shop, Knit and Stitch, located in Cocoa Beach. With that being only an hour and a half drive, I knew I would have to go check it out! The Yarn Adventure Truck is a yarn shop on wheels! It was so nice to meet Katy and Dean in person after following them on social media for a while. They live and travel full time on the truck going from yarn shop to yarn shop and fiber festivals across the country. Maybe we will be lucky enough to host them next time they are in FL!
They have 30+ different hand dyed yarn vendors on board, but one in particular drew my eye. They had a tweed yarn from Haute Bohe’me Fibers in the most incredible deep periwinkle color that just spoke to me! It is their Mimi Fingering Tweed Yarn from their “Rockies” collection. The color is called Monkshood. I took all 3 skeins that the truck had! I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but thankfully I had brought my mom along. Moms are great for ideas after all (amongst many other things). She saw a simple granny cocoon thing on display at Knit and Stitch. She suggested I could do something similar with my new yarn, and that sounded good to me! I would just have to find the perfect pattern!
Now my new beautiful yarn was not the DK weight that this pattern calls for, it is a fingering weight. However, if you take a look at the pattern it is very easy to modify to use other yarns and make other sizes. So that is what I did! I also went down to a G6/4mm hook since I was using much thinner yarn that what the pattern calls for. Each skein has 438 yards and I used approximately 1,150 yards total, so about 2.75 skeins.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Movie Night Cocoon Cardi?
This granny square part worked up quickly in about 8 hours. It took me about another half hour to add the single crochet cuffs. If you went with a DK yarn it would take you less time for sure!

Gauge:
Gauge is not really important here as the pattern is written to specific measurements rather than a certain number of rows or stitches. The sample pictured on her blog is approximately 13 dc + 6 rows = 4”/10cm in double crochet.

All About the Movie Night Cocoon Cardi:
I wasn’t concerned about my yarn choice because the cocoon is simply a 40″ granny square folded and seamed a certain way. After that the cuffs are added. I figured that I would make as large of a granny square that my 3 skeins allowed (plus leave a little extra for the cuffs) for and seam it. Even if my granny square didn’t come out 40″, she states in the pattern that if you make a smaller square, it will be more of a mini cocoon and I was okay with that. Essentially you can use any yarn and hook that you wish to make this cocoon and I love that about it!
However I did have enough yarn and my granny square came out to 40″ inches before I seamed it. I wanted to be sure I still had enough yarn to do the cuffs because they really finish off this project nicely. I had just under half of the 3rd skein left when I finished the cuffs. I also chose to block my square before seaming it. It is such a fun accessory to throw on with all sorts of different outfits! It has quickly become a staple in my handmade wardrobe! I think I need more in other colors! I love mine with the lighter yarn because I can still wear it in the Summertime.

I hope that this pattern review was helpful and that you decide to make your own Movie Night Cocoon Cardi! If you do make one be sure to share with me in the comments below what yarn you chose and how much you love your new cocoon!
