It’s me, Emily with Crochet Aweigh.
Did you know that December 18th is National Ugly Sweater Day? I didn’t either, but this fun holiday tradition definitely deserves its own national day! The ugly Christmas sweaters began in the 1950s with the wildly commercialized and iconic “Jingle Bell Sweaters” which rose to fame and bottomed out in the late 80s. However as we all know the festive fashion made a comeback with the ugly sweater parties that gained popularity in the early 2000s, and are still going strong today.

As crocheters we have the ability to make our own ugly Christmas sweaters if we choose to. Thankfully for us, we have LOTS of holiday sweater patterns to choose from. Personally ugly sweaters are not really my thing, but beautiful, hand-stitched, homemade sweaters are! Below is a round up of 10 of my favorite not-so-ugly Christmas sweater crochet patterns that will get even your judgmental Aunt’s approval during Christmas dinner.

1: Cranberry Biscotti Turtleneck
The Cranberry Biscotti Turtleneck is a classic turtleneck offers texture galore! This sweater is worked from the top down and the bobbles are supposed to mimic festive cranberries. You will need between 1210-2420 yards of a worsted weight #4 yarn and a size H8/5.00mm hook. Michelle from MJ’s Off The Hook recommends WeCrochet Swish, a 100% superwash Merino wool. Another great choice would be Malabrigo Rios, Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Merino, or Berroco Vintage.
2: Gingerbread Cardigan
This whimsical Gingerbread Cardigan incorporates the ever-popular granny squares, but has a fun twist with the white trim stitches! This pattern is made-to-measure meaning that you can make it to fit any body! It uses a DK #3 weight yarn like Swish DK, Berroco Vintage DK, or Sarasota from Cascade Yarns.

3: Fair Isle Pine Sweater
This sweater by BrianaK Designs uses – you guessed it – the fair isle color work technique to create the stunning color changes here. The pattern is written top down so you can try it on as you go to get the right fit! The designer recommends WeCrochet Wool of the Andes, a worsted #4 weight 100% Peruvian Highland wool, but you can also use Pacific from Cascade, or Berroco Vintage.

4: Christmas Tree Jumper
This Christmas Tree Jumper is a rustic, tweedy, adorable holiday sweater that will spread holiday cheer to everyone who sees it! WeCrochet Brava Tweed would be the perfect yarn for this sweater, and you will also need G6/4mm and H8/5mm crochet hooks. It is worked top down and is written for sizes XS – 4X.

5: Men’s Nordic Tunisian Christmas Sweater
Men need fun Christmas sweaters too! This Nordic Tunisian Sweater is a modern take on a traditional Christmas sweater. This classic fit sweater is made with Tunisian simple stitches, and it is available in Men’s sizes S-7X. You will need a size 7mm Tunisian crochet hook with a cord and a DK #3 weight yarn. Berroco Vintage DK, WeCrochet Swish DK, or Berroco Remix Light would be a fun one if you are going for a tweed look.
6: Granny Spruce Sweater
The Granny Spruce Sweater may or may not be my favorite of this whole list! Cute bobbles and retro stripes in bright colors make this one super festive and cheerful. The pattern is written for sizes XS-5X, and it offers different lengths and sleeve options for all sizes. You will need a DK #3 weight yarn in a few different colors for this sweater.

7: Plaid Cardigan
This super comfy, oversized fit plaid cardigan features a beginner-friendly weaving technique to make the plaid stripes. The pattern includes lots of photo tutorials so that you can achieve this unique look. The designer calls for Lion Brand Wool Ease, which would be the perfect yarn for this!
8: Twinkling Trees Mosaic Crochet Sweater
Top down and seamless, this stunning sweater uses the mosaic technique to create the beautiful color work at the yoke. It has lots of customizable options like: long or short sleeves, optional ribbing, and body length. The sizes are XS-5X to fit chest sizes 30″-62″. WeCrochet Swish DK, or Berroco Vintage DK would be great for this sweater.
9: Winter Multiway Sweater
This sweater practically screams Winter! Its oversized fit and diamond pattern looks like the perfect throw over to keep you cozy! The pattern is written as made to measure and is considered intermediate level. You will need either a sport #2 weight like Brava Sport, Comfy Sport, or a DK #3 weight yarn like Lion Brand Wool Ease DK or Capra DK.
