Well yes of course, but there is still plenty of Summer left in August! Bucket hats are also perfect for apple picking, looking stylish at the back-to-school bus stop, wandering farmer’s markets, and heading to the pumpkin patch! What kind of yarn is best for bucket hats?
Most crocheters choose a 100% cotton yarn or a cotton/acrylic blend. Cotton has a really nice structure to it; it tends to hold its shape very well, making it excellent for bucket hats! Some of my favorite 100% cotton yarns are: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Natural Max Color from Circulo Yarns, and Nifty Cotton from Cascade yarns. Some cotton/acrylic blends that would work great for bucket hats are: Sarasota from Cascade yarns, Lion Brand Made with Love the Cottony One, and WeCrochet Comfy Worsted.
If you are hoping for something a bit softer, or warmer if you’re living in a climate where Autumn comes early, superwash wool is a great choice as well. Superwash wool can be machine washed and dried, which is important for a hat because it sits directly against your skin, so you want to be able to wash it often. M current favorite superwash wool is 220 Superwash Merino from Cascade Yarns. Or if you’d rather have a wool blend Berroco Vintage comes in #1 sock weight, #3 DK, #4 worsted, and #5 chunky, and Pacific from Cascade Yarns is absolutely amazing!

1: Lil Pumpkin Bucket Hat
This adorable little bucket hat is sized for babies, toddlers, and kids up to 10 years old! It features 2 different brim options. You know this project will work up super fast because it uses a #6 Bulky weight yarn. The designer used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick N Quick for her hat and a size N/9mm crochet hook.

2: Fact Check Bucket Hat
This hat was so eye-catching I had to include it! Make it in any colors depending on what season you plan to wear it, or your favorite colors! This is a free pattern from Yarnspirations and uses Red Heart Super Saver Yarn. I’m not a huge fan of that one personally, but I would definitely avoid choosing a 100% cotton yarn. This hat uses the tapestry crochet technique, and cotton isn’t a great choice because the carried color shows through a lot on cotton. You are better off with a cotton blend, or a wool on this one!

3: Annie Bucket Hat
Maybe you are ready to start your cold weather makes! If so, then the Annie Bucket Hat from Two of Wands is a super chic choice! The designer chose Lion Brand Yarn Go for Faux, which is a #6 weight faux fur yarn. You’ll need between 1-3 skeins depending on which size you’re making, and a size L11/8mm crochet hook.

4: Citrus Grove Bucket Hat
And on the opposite end of the Seasonal spectrum for you lads and ladies who are still soaking up the Summer Sun, the Citrus Grove Bucket Hat will help you hold onto those sunbeams a little longer! You will need to grab your favorite #4 worsted weight cotton like Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for this hat and your G6/4.00mm crochet hook!

5: Granny Stitch Bucket Hat
This hat is just as cute as a button! It uses 2 strands of Comfy Worsted, a #4 weight Pima cotton blend. By holding the 2 strands together, you end up with something more like a #6 bulky weight yarn so that hat works up super fast! The pattern by MJ’s Off the Hook is written for every size: newborn – adult.

6: Raffia Bucket Hat
Now here is an exciting one! The construction is simple and classic, but it is made with Raffia, a paper-like product. Raffia is lightweight, water resistant, and quick drying making it ideal for beach days. The designer recommends Ra-ra Raffia from Wool and the Gang.

7: Flower Power Bucket Hat
Flowers are so cute on bucket hats! This is described as an easy level pattern. The designer used Lily Sugar n Cream Cotton yarn for this fun hat, but I prefer Nifty Cotton from Cascade Yarns.

8: Granny Squares Bucket Hat
This is a fun take on the classic granny squares! This bucket hat from Make & Do Crew uses Lion Brand Pima Cotton, but Lion Brand Coboo would also be a perfect choice! Pima cotton is an elevated version of cotton, it often lasts longer and is softer than standard cotton.

9: Apple Orchard Bucket Hat
I would so wear this to my local farmer’s market! This bucket hat uses 4 different colors of Nifty Cotton from Cascade Yarns. You can use whatever colors you’d like though, depending on what kind of apple is your favorite! You will also need a G6/4mm crochet hook.

10: Reversible Mosaic Crochet Bucket Hat
Our final bucket hat is a bit different! This hat uses the mosaic crochet technique, and is reversible! Mosaic crochet is a technique that creates images using only one yarn color at a time. Each row you alternate the color, but don’t have to carry the other color. It is a cool way to create images in crochet. Premier Yarns Basix Worsted would be a great choice for this hat!
