Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
I have had the Hibernation Slipper Boots on my list since they were first released. My memory was refreshed when Jennifer added a video tutorial a couple months ago. Since I have made some sort of slipper for myself for the last several years, this year these are it! Although they work up fairly quickly with the bulky yarn, they are a little laborious. There is a bit of attaching and sewing involved. However the end result is totally worth it. If you are looking for a high impact crochet Christmas gift, the Hibernation Slipper Boots might just be it!
The other slipper/sock patterns that I have made in previous years are The Warmest Feet Ever Slipper Socks and The Easiest Crochet Slippers.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet Hibernation Slipper Boots?
- Chunky (Weight 5) yarn for Main Color – I used 173 yards of Lion Brand Hue and Me in Magic Hour
- Worsted (Weight 4) yarn for Coordinating Colors 1 and 2 – I used 50 yards of Big Twist Renewal in Gray and 57 yards of Soho Lively in Gotham
- I9/5.5 mm Crochet Hook and H8/5 mm Crochet Hook – see material notes
- 1″ Buttons (optional)
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers
- Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:
For the base portion of the slipper boots I used Lion Brand Hue and Me as the designer did. This yarn is my favorite chunky yarn to work with. I find a lot of other chunky yarns a bit uncomfortable, but Hue and Me is perfect. This yarn contains wool. If you are looking for non animal fibers, Premier Serenity Chunky Tweed or Cascade Anthem Chunky could be suitable substitutes.
For the cuff portion, I switched to DK weight yarn using Big Twist Renewal and Soho Lively. Both of these yarns are discontinued. The designer used Lion Brand Wool Ease and Lion Brand Scarfie Lite, both of which are not discontinued. I would recommend them unless you’re looking to avoid animal fibers. Any worsted weight acrylic should substitute pretty well for the Wool Ease. Red Heart Unforgettable or Loops and Threads Facets can work well in place of the Scarfie Lite.
In the pattern, the designer uses an I9/5.5 mm crochet hook for the main color and an H8/5 mm crochet hook for the cuff. Since I went down in yarn weight for the cuff, I only used the I9/5.5 mm hook.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet Hibernation Slipper Boots?
I spent around four hours making the the size 5/6 slipper boots.

What Size Are the Hibernation Slipper Boots?
My 5/6 size slipper boots are 9.5 inches from heel to toe and 4.5 inches tall. Additionally my cuff part was just over 3 inches tall and 13″ around. Although they aren’t snug, they fit well.
The pattern is available in women’s sizes 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, and 11/12.
Gauge:
12 stitches and 11 rows is equal to 4 inches in single crochet using Hue and Me yarn. The designer also provides gauges for the other two yarns. I didn’t actually check my gauge for the cuff, as long as it is close, it should fit the top of the bootie. Luck was on my side because mine was very close even with the yarn weight change. However if it doesn’t quite fit it is easy enough to adjust by adding more rows or stitches.
All About Making the Hibernation Slipper Boots:
I made one slight change to my slipper boots. For the last round on the cuff portion I chose to leave it off. Instead, I used a round of single crochet to attach the cuff. This saved me a little sewing and since I was making these in the car while traveling it was a lot easier.
The Soho Lively yarn that I used is a beautiful self striping yarn. It also has teal and purple in the skein. I chose to cut the yarn so that I could keep my slipper boots looking more similar. Otherwise I would have had one in the blue and white and one in the teal and purple. Although you could definitely just work through the yarn and have different colored slippers, this was not the look that I wanted.
I absolutely love how these slipper boots turned out. They were well worth the extra effort. Additionally they are super comfortable and are becoming my favorite slippers to wear all day!!
