I’ve been working to finish up the projects that I’ve drafted videos for so I can clear those off my computer for space. In doing so, I pulled out and completed the Gia Ornaments, which are easy granny square ornaments, and that sparked the idea of Christmas in July!
I don’t normally do Christmas in July, but I never have time towards the end of the year to work up Christmas projects because I enjoy Fall projects up to the middle or end of November, then I am in full gift mode, and then it’s the New Year, so this year I decided to start celebrating early.

I worked my bag up to look like Santa, but you could work it in green for an Elf or Leprechaun, or in Brown for a Pilgrim. Santa’s suit does have white trim that I did not add, but you could work the center most 5 or 7 stitches in white to represent the trim.

I don’t often carry around a purse, and am not really a make up person, but I do enjoy using my bag for crochet hooks, stitch markers, pencils and other crochet essentials! Here you can see my Manatee Crochet Hook, and Koi Fish Crochet Hook. These are custom made by SiennasBowtique on Etsy, and they’re my favorite hooks!

Prefer a solid colored bag? Try the Shay Cosmetic Bag or Hook Pouch (free crochet pattern).

My Shay series features easy single crochet stitch patterns. Suitable for beginners and advanced alike! Find wearables and accessories here on Cre8tion Crochet, and home decor projects on EyeLoveKnots.

Make a pair of Elf Leg Earrings with plastic canvas to complete the look.

Materials:
- 160 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie; 110 Yards of Fiesta Red, 35 Yards of Black and 15 Yards of Bumblebee
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook – I love my ergonomic hooks from SiennasBowtique on Etsy
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional: Jewelry Pliers
- Optional for Lining: Fabric, Zipper, Thread and Sewing Machine – I used a pre-made bag that I get at Hobby Lobby where all the canvas items are, and stuck inside my crocheted bag – it measured 9″ wide by 6″ tall – here is a similar bag on Amazon, and I like to use Silamide thread for sewing.
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream with G6/4.25mm Hook (because it’s a touch thicker)
I recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse.
Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook because it’s not as relaxed as cotton): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value
You will need multiple balls of yarn, or to use both tail ends from each color.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
About an hour and a half.
Measurements:
9″ Wide by 6.25″ Tall
Gauge, in Pattern:
15 SC by 15 Rounds = 4 1/8″; 1st 6 Rounds = 1 1/2″ Tall
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, and slip stitch join to the first stitch.
If you’re following the video tutorial, it works as is, but I’ve changed the written pattern to get a little more height so in the first section of red, the written pattern has 7 rounds instead of 6. Biggest difference is to drop the tail ends to the inside of the bag, which is the wrong side.
To change yarn colors in the round, do so in the last yarn over of the previous stitch. To see a visual, check out my How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet tutorial. To change yarn colors at the end of a row, slip stitch as normal, then yarn over and pull through with new color. Pull on the tail end of the original color and it will disappear. Chain 1 with new color, and continue on. As you work, the loop from the previous tail may pop up because it won’t be secured until used again, or woven in, but just tug on the tail end, and it will disappear again.
The yarn is dropped when not in use, not carried. You will need to work with multiple tail ends or bobbins. For most of the project, you can work from both tail ends of the ball, except in the center black part of the buckle, you will need a 3rd tail end – I cut a long tail end to use in there before attaching the black after the buckle in the same round.
In Rounds 9 through 21, work the first stitch of the round into the second stitch (so the colorwork lines up properly).
It’s best to weave in ends as you go so they’re easier to reach.
