Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
Summer is in full swing here, it is so hot! I am gravitating towards those small projects. No hot lap for me. Saving all the blankets and bigger projects for when it cools down.
The Simple Cotton Pouch definitely fits the bill. This project can be finished easily in an afternoon. Perfect for holding all your cards or other small items. It would also make a cute travel first aid kit.
If you sell at markets, this one packs a big punch with little effort involved. This little bag has some rows for added texture. However if you were looking to streamline your prep you could easily just do half double crochet throughout.
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Pouch?
- 55 Yards of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool in Taupe
- G6/4mm hook
- Decorative Button (optional)
- Velcro pieces or sewable snap closure
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Stitch Markers (optional)

Material Notes:
Cotton yarn is a perfect match for this project. It is sturdy and tends to stretch less over time. Making it the best yarn for bags and pouches.
However, I wanted mine to match my Cateline Cabled Bag that I made a few months ago. Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool is 100% wool so I don’t recommend it if you have sensitivities. I think this yarn worked well. It may stretch a little more over time. However I’m planning on keeping the contents on the lighter side so I don’t think it will cause any issues.
The pattern also calls for a snap closure. I thought that I had a snap on hand but I couldn’t find it. I decided to try self adhesive Velcro pieces that I found while looking for my snaps. Surprise, they actually stuck to the yarn and are still stuck tight even after using it several times.
A decorative button was also added to make the outside a little more interesting.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Pouch?
This pouch took less than an hour from start to finish. I made a slight modification, see Pattern Notes below. Additionally I used Velcro so I didn’t have the time that it would take to sew the snap.
Measurements:
My pouch is 4.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide after assembly. Pre assembly my measurements were 11.75 inches by 4.5 inches.
Gauge:
18 stitches and 12 rows equals 4 inches in hdc.
Pattern Notes:
I made one slight adjustment to the seaming method. I used stitch markers to help line up my stitches as laid out in the pattern. First I crocheted to the top of the first side seam through both layers. Then I stitched across the inner top edge to the other side. This is just through one layer. Finally I stitched down the other side, again through both layers. This eliminates the yarn cut between the side seams. Refer to the diagram above for a visual.
I love how this little pouch turned out! I am ready to make a few more, maybe with some pretty colors!!
