20 free crochet vest patterns

Originally published in October of 2014, this round up collection of free crochet vest patterns has been one of our more popular posts, and we can see why! We’ve updated it in September of 2024 to add more free vest crochet patterns and remove some older ones that no longer led to their destination.

It’s me, Emily with Crochet Aweigh.

Crochet Vests are the perfect layer for any season! I especially love to use them as layers in the Winter, but if you change up the weight and fiber choice, crochet vests can easily be worn all year long.

I hope you enjoy this round up of 20 free crochet vest patterns.

Free Vest Crochet Patterns:

Drapey Crochet Vest

The Drapey Crochet Vest is a free vest pattern brought to you by Yarnspirations. It is described as “your new favorite layer”, and easy for a beginner crocheter. The yarn used for this is Red Heart Stardust, which is a fingering weight #1 yarn that is no longer available. Some good alternatives would be Aranucania Huasco Sock Yarn, Berroco Vintage Sock, or (one of my personal faves) Mirasol Inka yarn. The pattern is written for sizes S – 3X.

Grey Splendor Vest

The Grey Splendor Vest is designed by Kim Guzman for Yarnspirations. You will need crochet hook sizes H8/5mm and I9/5.5mm. It includes sizes S – 2X. This silhouette would be flattering on all body types! It specifies Red Heart Shimmer yarn, but that is no longer available. It was a worsted weight with a metallic thread running through it. Instead, you can try Caron Simply Soft Party.

Leaves of Summer

The Leaves of Summer Vest is a super stylish vest with a cute crossover detail in the front. Designed by Doris Chan, this pattern uses Tahki Cotton Classic Lite, which is not available for purchase anymore. I would recommed either Elsebeth Lavold Hempathy or Juniper Moon Summer Solstice. This pattern calls for a G6/4mm hook, but be sure to check your gauge! Gauge is 16 stitches by 8 rows.

 The Pineapple Lace Circular Vest

The Pineapple Lace Circular Vest is designed by Dorianna Rivelli of The Lavender Chair. Pineapple stitches are really cool because they look so much harder than they actually are, so you get an awesome stitch pattern for not a lot of work. This free pattern includes sizes S, M, and L. It calls for 2-3 cakes of Mandala yarn in DK #3 weight. She may have used Lion Brand Mandala Yarn for her vest. You will also need an H8/5mm crochet hook.

Unique Cropped Vest

This Unique V Neck Cropped Vest, designed by Lorene Haythorn Eppolite and hosted here on Cre8tion Crochet, is so cute! You can wear it in so many different ways! The pattern includes instructions for sizes XS – XL. The yarn that Lorene chose was discontinued by Lion Brand, however we can still see that it is a bulky weight/5 yarn in acrylic. A good replacement would be something like Berroco Remix Chunky. This is a yarn made of recycled textiles and has a tweed look to it; perfect for a vest! This project would work up super quickly as you need a size M13/9mm hook to make it!

Granny Motif Vest

Can you believe that this design was originally published four decades ago?? Crazy. This free pattern from Red Heart Yarns is available from Yarnspirations. It calls for Red Heart Super Saver, but I personally would make this out of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton to make it more “breathable”.

Tied Up in Tweed Vest

The Tied Up in Tweed Vest, designed by myself and hosted here at Cre8tion Crochet, is a fun take on the traditional vest as it is tied up the sides instead of the front! This free pattern uses Berroco Remix Light, which as we’ve already mentioned is a tweed-looking yarn that is made of recycled textiles! The “light” version is a DK weight yarn. The pattern is written for sizes XS – XL, but is easily customizable for smaller or larger sizes.

Waistcoat in Alpaca

Nearly Spring crochet Waistcoat is a stunning lacey piece that is good to throw on over any outfit! Made with DROPS Alpaca, which is a 100% sport weight yarn, this vest is sure to be super light and soft! The yarn comes in 54 different colors! You will need an H8/5mm hook. It includes instructions for S – XXL. The lacey design is made of treble crochet shells.

Spring Sun Mandala Vest

Mandalas are having a moment right now! This stunning piece was designed by Yarnutopia. She recommends Brava Worsted, or Lion Brand Mandala Yarn. As this is supposed to be very “drape-y” she used a larger hook, a size J10/6mm. The vest is worked from the center out. It is written for size S/M, but she includes instructions on how to make a larger size.

Leona Vest

The Leona vest is a sophisticated option for your layering. The pattern is written for sizes S – 3X. The yarn recommend is DROPS Paris, which is 100% cotton worsted weight. Another good option would be Berroco Modern Cotton. The hook size is J10/6mm so this vest should work up fast!

Serenity Crochet Vest

Maybe you are looking for something a little more boho? The Serenity Vest is it! Jess from Make and Do Crew used Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball, but it’s no longer available. Some other alternatives would be Ombre cake yarns like Lollipop or Manaya from Hobbii yarn. This is a very beginner-friendly vest as it is made in 2 panels and then sewn down the back.

 Crochet Poncho Vest

This Poncho vest from Wilmade is a variation of her Perfect Gift Poncho design. It uses Lion Brand Scarfie, which is a bulky weight wool blend available in lots of colors. The pattern is size inclusive, offering up to size 5X! It calls for a size 10mm hook so you’ll be done with this in no time!

The Balmoral Vest

The Balmoral Vest from Hobbii is very unique because at first glace, you would think that this is knitted! This is another vest that is crocheted in 2 panels and then sewn together. The yarn used here is Hobbii Tweed Delight, a worsted wool, acrylic, and viscose blend. This vest could be styled so many different ways!

The Summer Breeze Vest

Designed by Rachel of Desert Blossom Crafts, this vest will surprise you! The name has “Summer” in it, but this vest was designed with wool yarn! Stroll Merino from Knit Picks to be exact! Not to fret though…this wool is fingering weight and super soft so you CAN wear it in the Summer. Rachel says you can style this vest in just about any way, and its a super simple make! One back panel, 2 front panels, and sewn up the sides. She highly recommends blocking once you’re done.

Stitch Please Rainbow Granny Vest

This pattern is available as a free download from Premier yarns. It uses (you guessed it) Stitch Please worsted weight superwash wool. It is available in many different colors so your granny square color combos could be endless! You will need a G6/4mm hook, or whichever to match gauge. Gauge here is easy because one granny square is 4″ once blocked.

Strawberry Fields Sweater Vest Top

My jaw dropped when I saw this adorable vest! This free pattern is designed by Heather of HayHay Crochet. She also has a link for her YouTube tutorial for this pattern. She chose I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby, which is a very soft 100% acrylic. I really like that yarn for baby blankets, but personally I would choose something else like Berroco Vintage, or Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton to do a wearable. It is written for sizes S – 2XL.

Bohemian Vest

Now this is a unique vest! Fosbas Design has created a vest pattern where you get to choose the yarn weight! She wrote it for sport, DK, or worsted weight and specifies all the necessary yardages! She chose Cotton Kings Sultan from Hobbii, which is an Ombre sport weight. You will also need a G6/4mm, H8/5mm, or J10/6mm depending on which yarn you select.

Crochet V-Neck Sweater Vest

This classic sweater vest is designed by Viv Crochets. She provides a video tutorial as well! She says that this vest is perfect for an advanced beginner because there is some shaping along the neckline that a brand new crocheter may struggle with. She calls for a worsted weight yarn like Lion Brand Jeans.

The Maglia Crochet Vest

This super cute fringed vest is designed by ChristaCo Design. It is worked in one piece from the back up. The designer chose Caron Simply Soft, which is a worsted weight acrylic, and a J10/6mm hook. The pattern is written for sizes XS – 5X. You could easily turn this short vest into a long duster if you wanted to!

Crossroads Vest

Finally we have the Crossroads vest by Ali of The Turtle Trunk. This mesh vest is written for sizes XS – 5X. Ali chose Circulo Natural yarn, which is one of my favorite cottons of all time! It is durable, easy to wash, and drapes so nicely! The beautiful lacey design is a combo of crossed treble stitches and uses a Size M hook for an extremely quick project!
