Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
There is nothing better than a good chevron pattern. I have made a few blankets and a bag with chevrons. However this was my first time making them in a hat pattern. First off I like how the chevrons are started in the brim of the hat. Then those crossed stitches add so much texture. But the thing I loved the most about the Retro Cross Stitch Chevron Beanie is that where you make your color changes can completely change the whole look. Therefore you can make this beanie several times and it wouldn’t necessarily look like the same pattern. I have so many plans for more!
What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Chevron Beanie?
- Approximately 170 yards of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used 107 yards of Mary Maxim Value in Dark Rose and 60 yards Mary Maxim Value in Aran
- L11/8 mm Crochet Hook (for the brim)
- 7 mm Crochet Hook (for the body)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
- Retro Cross Stitch Chevron Beanie, Paid Crochet Pattern from Sunshine and Daisies on Etsy

Material Notes:
This beanie will look best in at least two colors to show off the stitches. Highly contrasting colors will help the pattern stand out more. However similar colors will give it a nice subdued look.
Although I didn’t add one to mine, a pom would be perfect.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Chevron Beanie?
Because of the slip stitch brim which takes up the majority of the time I estimate that this beanie took about four and a half hours to complete.
What Size is the Finished Chevron Beanie?
The finished Retro Cross Stitch Chevron Beanie measures 9 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide laid flat.
Gauge:
Brim: 14 slip stitches, 21 rows equals 4 inches
Body: 13 sts, 11 rows in stitch pattern equals 4 inches
All About the Retro Cross Stitch Chevron Beanie:
The Retro Cross Stitch Chevron Beanie pattern requires some advanced skills such as slip stitches and adding and skipping stitches in the brim to create the chevron shape. Additionally you are working a classic chevron pattern for the body. Tiffany does a wonderful job of keeping the directions simple. There are pictures to help with proper stitch placement if you’re not already familiar with how to crochet chevrons.
A thicker worsted weight yarn will work best in this pattern as it is not easy to adjust the width. Additionally keeping the slip stitches in the brim as loose as possible and pulling them up is necessary to get the correct brim dimensions. I had to go up a few hook sizes, to an 8 mm, to get my stitches loose enough.
