Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.
I was first introduced to crochet earrings in 2022. Since then I have crocheted close to 100 pairs of earrings. Today I am sharing the fifty patterns I have used as well as some other information. Hopefully you will be inspired to make a pair of two of your own.
Why Should I Make Crochet Earrings?
Crochet earrings are lightweight and easy to wear. Making your own earrings means you can choose the materials that are used. So if you have allergies or sensitivities to metals or other materials those can be avoided. Additionally if you lose one you can always make another to replace it. Furthermore crochet earrings are easy to make and customize to your preferences. There are a wide range of design options available from small motifs to big motifs, florals and fruits or even animals.
What Kind of Yarn Do You Use for Crochet Earrings?
The majority of earring patterns that I have made use #10 cotton crochet thread. However I have used #3 and #8 cotton crochet thread, CYC #1 fingering weight yarn, CYC #2 sport weight yarn, and embroidery thread on some of my earrings. Although I have not made them, I have seen crochet earring patterns written for thinner #20 cotton crochet thread as well as thicker yarn like CYC #3 DK weight. Additionally I have seen wire used to crochet earrings, but I have yet to try this technique. For more information on yarn weights see the guide to yarn weights below.

What Hooks Do I Need to Make Crochet Earrings?
Typically you will find steel crochet hooks as the recommendation for crochet earrings. They are commonly sized from .40 mm to 3.50 mm. When I make earrings with #10 cotton crochet thread, I usually use a 1.40 mm or a 1.50 mm steel crochet hook.
What Other Materials Do I Need to Make Crochet Earrings?
In addition to your yarn and your hook, you will need earring findings to make them wearable. Although the majority of patterns use fishhook wires or ear studs, you could use other findings to fit your needs. Just be aware of the construction because not all earring findings work the same. Also you will need a pair of jewelry pliers to attach the earring findings. Technically you only need one but many people prefer to use two. Finally you will also need a small needle for weaving in those ends and a pair of scissors.
Additionally I like to use jump rings with my fish hook wires or studs with drops. They aren’t necessary, but I feel like they make the earrings move more freely. However one drawback is you can potentially lose parts of the earring if you don’t get them closed properly.
Some patterns use additional jewelry findings such as hoops or other metal shapes. Furthermore beads are a nice addition to crochet earrings. Even if the pattern doesn’t include them, they are easy to add. There are several ways to add beads to crochet, and depending on which you choose, a beading needle may be helpful to have. You can find more information on adding beads in my Alma Fan Earrings review.
Another optional material is stiffening spray. I prefer to use it on all my crochet earrings, but not everyone does. If you choose not to use stiffeners, I highly recommend at least blocking your earrings. To block your earrings you will need water, blocking mats (or similar material) and blocking pins (sewing pins will also work). Blocking your crochet earrings opens lacy stitches and makes them lay flat and look even.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Pair of Earrings?
The amount of time it takes depends on the intricacy of the design. Most designs can be made in an hour or less. However if you haven’t made them before it may take a bit longer. Working with tiny thread means the stitches are hard to see. Some people like to practice with thicker yarn and bigger hooks to get the stitches down before making the design with the smaller thread. Another tip is to use lighter colored yarns because it is easier to see the stitches.
A Guide to Yarn Weights:
CYC (Crafty Yarn Council) measurements for yarn range from 0-7. Lace weight (0) sometimes referred to as thread or light fingering is the thinnest. Jumbo (7) is the thickest. Additional sizes include (1) super fine or fingering, (2) fine or sport, (3) light or DK, (4) medium or worsted, (5) bulky or chunky and (6) super bulky or chunky.
Crochet cotton thread comes in sizes ranging from size 3 – 100. It is 100% cotton and can be mercerized. Most typically you will find 3, 5, 8, 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80 and 100. Unlike CYC, the larger the number the thinner the thread. This means that 3 is the thickest while 100 is very thin.
