Crochet Sandals with Flip Flop Soles

Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.

About eight years ago I started crocheting again. When my kids were little and I worked full time, I just didn’t have much time for crochet. One of the first things that I saw when I was getting back into crochet was crochet shoes with flip flops for the soles. I bought some clearance flip flops but I never did make any of those shoes. Several weeks ago I came across one of those shoe patterns that I had thought about making all those years ago. I remembered I had the flip flops still just hanging around and decided it was time to give it a try.

This free pattern for making crochet sandals with flip flop soles from Sewrella was the perfect pattern for my flip flops! It worked up quickly, and they turned out so cute!

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet Sandals:

  • Approximately 90 yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used 66 yards of Knit Picks Dishie Twist in Coffee and 20 yards Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Black
  • 2 mm and 3 mm Crochet Hooks – We love Clover Amour Ergonomic hooks!
  • Rubber Sole Flip Flops – These would work!
  • A Sharp Tool for Poking Holes – I used this one meant for clay
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

I would definitely recommend a strong cotton yarn for this type of pattern. I used a combination of Knit Picks Dishie Twist yarn and Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn, which are both nice and strong. Unless you are planning on indoor use only, wool or acrylic probably won’t hold up as well. Plus cotton is a less stretchy yarn so it should keep its shape better for frequent use.

You will also need to make sure you have a pair of flip flops with a rubber sole. I bought mine awhile ago on clearance, but you can find a similar pair on Amazon. To be able to crochet into the soles, you have to put holes into them. I used a sharp tool that is used for clay, but you could also use a different sharp tool such as an awl or ice pick.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet Sandals with Flip Flop Soles?

For me it took around 3 hours to make these sandals. Most of the time was spent getting the initial stitches in the soles and weaving in the ends.

What Size Are Crochet Sandals with Flip Flop Soles?

For my sandals I used a size 6/7 sole. I poked 28 holes for the heel. My measurement for this section is approximately 8 inches wide and 2.5 inches tall. With the adjustments I made to the toe section (see pattern notes), I poked only 5 holes on each side for attaching. My toe pieces were approximately 5 inches wide and 2.25 inches long. In hindsight I probably should have poked 6-7 holes for the toes.

Gauge:

There is no gauge provided in this free pattern. Because of that, it may need some adjustments to fit properly. Additionally the number of holes and spacing may be different for everyone. For reference my gauge was 16 stitches and 20 rows in single crochet for a four inch square.

All About Making Crochet Sandals with Flip Flop Soles:

If you try this pattern out, it is important that you pull your hook out at the same angle that you put it in when crocheting to the soles. If you straighten your hook it will tear through. It is very awkward trying to get the stitches in the flip flops. However once you get this part done the rest of it is pretty easy.

Because my feet are a little smaller, I changed the toe section. First I didn’t do the initial row of single crochet, working row two directly into the chains. Then I also left off rows eight and nine. Finally I used single crochet for the border. Plus I left a long tail at the beginning and at the end for sewing. Additionally I changed the strap length to be shorter.

In hindsight if I were to make these again I would make the toe pieces a little narrower as well. They do fit a little loose on my feet. I had not considered that they would gain some width from the way they are attached.

I hope you choose to try out this great free pattern! Let me know in the comments below what colors you would choose for your sandals!
