Hi! This is Kami. Be sure to come join me over on Instagram and say Hi.

A couple years ago Nicole was looking for testers for her Patch of Asters Bag.  Typically I don’t buy yarn until I am actually chosen as a tester, but I just happened upon this yarn before testers were selected. But I didn’t get chosen. However I bought the pattern as soon as it was released.  Then I had a lot of other stuff going on so I set it all aside.  Last month I came across the yarn and remembered exactly what I had bought it for.  So I added the project to my list and got started.  I can’t believe I waited so long to make this gorgeous bag!  I am planning on giving this one to my sister.  But I am already planning another one for me (not that I need another bag).  Now I just have to make more time.

Bags make lovely thank you gifts, Mother’s Day gifts, and graduation gifts.  Also they are just super handy just to have around.  I love bags!!  Interested in more bag ideas? First check out my 10 Tried and True Bags post.  Here I share some of my favorite bag projects. Then check out my review of the Cateline Cable Bag.  Additionally you can find my review of the Sassy Ocean Beach Bag from last year’s Totes Ready for Summer Blog Hop, as well as links to the other featured bags. Or maybe you are just looking for a good market tote. Finally you can check out the Through the Window Crossbody Bag.  I haven’t made this one yet, but I have plans to soon.

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet a Patch of Asters Bag?

  • Approximately 500 yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used 227 yards K+C Essential Cotton in Cream, 102 yards K+C Essential Cotton in Lavender Field, 85 yards K+C Essential Cotton in Gulf Side, and 85 yards K+C Essential Cotton in Rain Forest
  • H8/5 mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Patch of Asters Bag, Paid Crochet Pattern by Nicole’s Creations via Etsy

Material Notes:

Unfortunately, the K+C yarn used in my project was discontinued.  Based on my experience, good alternatives include Knit Picks Dishie, Premier Cotton Sprout, Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, and Lion Brand Pima Cotton. The designer’s bags used Dishie and Lion Brand Re-Up.  I haven’t used Re-Up so I can’t say how it would compare.  However I feel this bag would work well in any cotton or cotton blend yarn.  If you wanted, you could even use acrylic or wool – just keep in mind that these fibers behave differently than cotton.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Patch of Asters Bag?

For this bag, it took around 8 hours. It took me around 5 1/2 hours to make all the squares. Then I spent around another 2 1/2 hours joining, finishing and weaving my ends. I chose not to block my squares or my finished bag. Blocking probably would have added around 2 hours plus drying time.

What Size is a Patch of Asters Bag?

My finished bag is about 14 inches across and 14.5 inches tall from the lowest point to the highest, not including the straps.

Gauge:

Using the gauge in the pattern, the first 4 rounds measured approximately 4 inches.

All About Crocheting the Patch of Asters Bag:

I made just a couple minor changes to my bag.  Because I used the main color as my trim color, I felt like it needed a little texture at the top to coordinate with the texture of the joins.  Using back post single crochet for round 2 adds the texture.  Although it is not an exact match, I liked it better than plain single crochet.

Also, I accidentally cut after completing round 3 of the trim. Therefore I changed the straps to attach  directly to the peaks on the bag, since I would  need to rejoin anyway.  I did this by just attaching the yarn at one peak and chaining 70 stitches before attaching it to the other peak.  Then I just repeated this for the other side.

Everything about this bag is great!  There are so many ways that you can customize it to make it your own.  From the colors that you choose to the way that you join the squares, there are just so many options.  I honestly can’t wait to make another.
